Willpower?

In light of the fact that today is Ash Wednesday, I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about willpower, or, my lack of it. I am very stubborn, and like to think I can do anything I set my mind to. My problem is, I get in the way of me. If I had willpower, I would run a faster 5k. If I had willpower, I wouldn’t eat sweets everyday, and so on and so forth. My point is, being healthy takes effort. You don’t just wake up in the morning toned and energetic and at your ideal weight, with healthy organs, skin, etc. It takes work!
Now, I am not Catholic, but I have over the years attempted to give up different things, and guess what, it has been an EPIC FAIL every time. SO, I decided this year, to just not set myself up for failure and disappointment. Instead, I have decided to set a lent “goal” for myself. My goal is to be more healthy. That’s it. whatever that looks like. I want to look back on these 40 days at Easter, and it be obvious I am eating, thinking, and living more healthy. To give you an idea of what I mean, here are a few things I came up with I want to do: 1.)wear sunscreen everyday, not just on my face (which I already do) 2.)strength train twice a week 3.)try and get in more calories at breakfast so I am not starving later in the day 4.)try new meals that include veggies 5.)run every so often without my garmin, just for fun, for the sake of running. no distance or pace requirements, just run! 6.)Wake up a few minutes earlier in the mornings to mentally prepare myself for the day, calmly, instead of just getting up, rushing out the door, and eating in the car.

Do those things make sense? I covered skin, working out, food, mental health, etc. Just overall, a healthy me. I am going to try and keep track of the specific things I do so I can recap them all at Easter!

this is serious willpower!

Today I did some speedwork at the gym, I did 2 miles at a fast pace for me. Several times I wanted to stop or slow down, but with this new willpower thing…I made myself keep going and am proud! 🙂

Happy Mardi Gras and a review

Yes yes I am aware that 99% of you could care less today is Mardi Gras, and that 85% of you didn’t realize it was Mardi Gras. When you are from the area though, it’s just one of those things that is a part of you. I miss it sometimes, and am sad I didn’t get to go to any parades. Anyone up for a road trip next year? I can play tour guide!!!
Ok I am getting off topic. The Mardi Gras 1/2 marathon is in less than 2 weeks. I know I have talked about not feeling ready, which I don’t, but I am so excited about the whole weekend anyway! Hanging out with friends, eating good food, what can be better? I got my e-mail to print out my waiver, and Bobby and I are in corral 13. I don’t know how many there are but I think it goes into the 20’s? But they are going to let each corral go at 1-2 minute starts and not TEN like in Disney. BOO!
We also got all of our final info about the expo, bands, etc. Being the type A person i am, I printed it all out, busted out a highlighter and went to town! Let the countdown begin! Tomorrow my goal is to do some speedwork, we shall see! Today i did 20 minutes elliptical and am doing some more strength training.

Ok so as promised here is my review of my runningskirts.com long sleeve shirt. They actually have (had) two kinda…one is softer on the inside (polyester) and it’s the one I have, the other one is the one made of lycra, the one I have was $58.00, the lycra one is $48.00. I know I know, expensive but SO worth it. I have worn this baby every time I long run in the cold and it’s SO WARM and has the nifty thumb holes to keep your hands warm. sizing is a bit odd, I am not a big person but I got a large. You want it to be snug, and the sleeves are TIGHT but that’s how it is supposed to be. I wanted the large for more length in the torso (I am 5’9″).
This shirt wicks sweat away from your body and really helps with the wind, even when running in super cold temps I actually get a bit too warm in it sometimes! You don’t have to wear a bunch of layers with this baby. I highly recommend it. I bought mine at the Disney expo. On th website I don’t see the one I got, but I am sure if you e mail them you can get more info. Here is the page: running skirts tops
Ok here are my pics. ignore the brown clip attached to the bottom of my shirt. i wear clips on my shirt all the time!

Experimental Cooking

Today I was off from work for President’s Day, so I decided to try my hand at a couple of new recipes. First, I went to the store to get ingredients for pumpkin spice muffins, and what do you know, there is a PUMPKIN shortage, and so there have been no pumpkins since Christmas! I was so bummed out, but decided to make some banana muffins courtesy of my friend Jen’s recipe. They came out looking good, but they didn’t have a ton of taste. I did not make them right..apparently I was supposed to use really ripe bananas, like, brown, sitting out for a week. They have the most flavor. Well, mine had a couple brown spots but that’s about it. I can definitely see them tasting good if I did them right, not that they are bad, just a bit bland, but I am going to eat the rest with peanut butter! So here ya go:

Preheat oven 400F. Spray 18 muffin pans with nonstick spray.

Ingredients
1 ½ c. wheat flour
¾ c. quick cooking oats
½ c. plus 1 T. brown sugar
1/3 c. ground flaxseed
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
¾ tsp. ground cinnamon
¼ tsp. salt
3 small over ripe bananas chopped
¾ c. skim milk
3 egg whites
3 T. canola oil
¼ c. granola

Preparation
Stir flour through salt. Make a well in the center of mix.
In a separate bowl, combine banana through oil and mix until smooth.
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients until just wet.
Scoop mix into muffin pans.
Sprinkle each muffin w/ granola.
Bake for 17- 19 minutes on 400®F. Cool in pan for 5-10 minutes. Finish
cooling on wire rack.

here are a couple pics I took:

ya live you learn, next time I will do them right!

Ok so my next experiment was taco soup. Most of you know I don’t like a lot of veggies, and try and find ways to slip them in that I can’t really taste. A girl made this for Bible study last week and it was really good so I decided to try my hand at it! I learned on this one too. I used Original rotel and it was a little too spicy for me, (I don’t like spicy though) so next time I will use mild rotel. Also, I did not do the stewed tomatoes.

Dump the following in a pot and heat on Medium on stovetop:

1 lb of cooked ground beef
1 can whole kernel corn
1 can Ranch style black beans
1 can rotel tomatoes-original
1 can stewed tomatoes (optional)
1 packet of taco seasoning mix
1 packet of ranch seasoning mix

Toppings: Cheese, Chips, Sour Cream

I usually double the recipe to last a few meals.

The last thing I made was chocolate covered strawberries, and I did the SAME THING i ALWAYS do, I cooked the chocolate too long, burnt it, and it got chunky. ug! So don’t make fun of how non-smooth they are. By the way, it’s Jen’s fault I made these! Her husband made her some and I wanted some!

So basically I learned a lesson with each thing I cooked today. I guess that’s how life is! We experiment and learn so we can do it better/right next time!

Today was strength training, I did abs and arms, may go to the gym for cross training tomorrow, we will see! Hope everyone had a good day!

A no fun Valentine’s Day run

So we did our long run today, 10 miles. From the title you can guess that this wasn’t a good thing. I knew it wouldn’t be “great” because I am a morning runner, and we didn’t get to run till 1:45 in the afternoon, the WORST part of the day for me, the slump. boo! It was about 52 degrees, not too bad, but windy. yuck.

Here I am getting ready to go!

The first 6 miles were good, I held the pace I want to hold for the race, and I was happy with that. Then we hit mile 7, and my hip started hurting and Bobby’s hamstring started hurting. We are a pathetic little couple. We pushed through mile 7 and part of 8 and really started hurting and basically walked most of mile 10. I know I know, slackers! But we hurt ssoo bad! At least we finished and we are feeling accomplished, but not really “ready” for the race. Oh well, we can only do so much. Hopefully it will all be ok once adrenaline kicks in.
here are a couple pics from our run on part of the trail.
This is in front of the neighborhood

Bobby looking all cute

Oh yes, wanted to mention. I am part of a fun message board called Running of the Ears, for people who love running and Disney. Well the girls on there love running skirts, so we had a mouse”skirt”teers shirt made, they are super cute!
the back says “it all started with a skirt” and the front says “The Mouseskirteers”

No work for me tomorrow, thank you Presidents Day! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Snow Pictures

Ok so nothing too exciting to report today. I guess I got a “workut” yesterday pushing the two giant snowballs up the hill that we made because I am SO SORE! Madness! Tomorrow we are going to atempt 10 miles, depending on the weather. Should be exciting!

Here are some snow pictures I took with my “real” camera.
these are from when I first got up, the snow came down for about 6 hours after this!

Sassy was NOT amused

Bella on the other hand LOVED it.

Bella was SO funny. She bounced, BOUNCED through the snow, and would shove her head into it, it was hilarious!

hehehe

So we decided to build a GIANT snowman, to make up for all the times we didn’t get to build one!

but just building one wasn’t enough for Bobby…so we rolled a second huge snowball up the hill. He literally had to get under it with his shoulder while I pushed from the top. It was SO heavy!

here is me and Bella with the finished Snowzilla!

True Love haha

House with the two giant snowmen

poor snowman this morning. Look at his arm sticking up out of the ground haha!

So that was our fun snowday! We had a blast, but we have had enough of it!
Hopefully it will warm up for our run tomorrow!

Endurance isn’t only physical

Snow Day

This morning I woke up after a glorious 9 hours of sleep, and then remembered, it was snowing when i went to bed last night! I looked out the window to find a beautiful 5 inches of snow, and still snowing! in central MS! The snow was still falling, too!
these pics are from my iphone so they aren’t great. I have some on my “real” camera I will post later at some point.
my house

woo hoo!

oh. my. gosh. Bella has never seen this much snow…she had a BLAST. She started bouncing through the snow, it was so cute. I videoed it and will post later with my “real” camera pics.

Sassy was having none of this though. She stayed inside for the fun festivities.

She kept shoving her face into the snow and running, it was hilarious. She was covered in it!

Here I am in the snow!

OK, so call us overachiever, but all those years we never got to make a snowman…well, we made up for them…with SNOWZILLA!

In case you can’t tell, that joke is about 6’5″!!! He was fun but difficult to make! A huge ball of snow is pretty darn heavy.
It finally stopped snowing about 2:00, and then the sun came out.

So while it was lots of fun, I would be happy just having one good snow a year. I had my fill and am over it haha!

So I am still getting over this cold…no workout today. may run or cross train tomorrow. We will see how I feel. I want to tell you about two great champion giveaways!
Shut up & Run
Happy Runner

Snow? SNOW!

Ok ok, so no I am not a liar. Yes, I went to Birmingham yesterday…and yes I am already home! We got there about 9:00 last night and me and another girl went and ran in the hotel gym. The gym was attached to the indoor pool, and the treadmills looked out through a window at the pool, and if you know anything about these babies you know its HUMID at an indoor pool…so….gym=humid too! It was gross.
we did 2 miles, but I was so proud. I usually run between a 10-11 minute mile on the treadmill, but I ran these two at a 9:10 pace, I was so proud! It felt really good to run fast.

ok so back to the snow. We, here, in MS were supposed to get 4-5 inches tonight. well, we kept getting conflicting reports. so this morning after one of the sessions we met up with our headmaster and she talked to a guy at the national weather center and yes, we are getting 4-6 inches so they gave us the option to go home after lunch, or stay, but if you stay, you could get stuck till Saturday morning instead of Friday night! Well, no way I was getting stuck so me and 7 others decided to go home.
So now, I have a 4 day weekend ahead of me. I am super excitd. Except, I think I may be getting sick, boo!

I am going to go charge my camera so I can take pics if it snows, eekk!

Bleh and Greek Yogurt

I realized the title of this would lead you to believe that I thought Greek yogurt was bleh. well…it kinda is and kinda isn’t, but that’s not what i meant! first the bleh part:
It has been nuts at my house. Sinck husband, sick dog = no workout yesterday. I had my gym clothes and everything…it just didn’t happen. I also had to pack because today the teacher’s leave for a conference in Birmingham. SO, that means I won’t be back till Friday night so I won’t have a new post until at least Friday, sorry! I will be hopefully running twice on the treadmill at the hotel gym though (at least this is what I did last year.)
The greek yogurt part. I tried this because I heard it was good for you, lots of protein, etc. I was nervous about it because I heard it has a strong sourish taste, like sour cream, which I do not really like. So I bought one, it was vanilla bean. Let’s just say I had to add a lot of cinnimon to it, but it still wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. It definately wasn’t yummy, but maybe it will grow on me. I am going to give it another shot and try some different flavors and brands and see what I like best. You should try it!
I had taco soup last night at a friend’s house and I was surprised I liked it because it had beans and tomato in it, but it was realy good! I am getting the recipe from her and I will post it here.

Aint’s No More!

SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS!

Last night was SO great. I had a blast watching my boys. They played so well, and really deserved it. I am so glad for my hometown, homestate, AAHH! Bless you boys!  My mom said it’s crazy down there. The parade is tomorrow, schools are letting out early, fun! My sister drove by the Time Picayune (NOLA newspaper) office and said there was a line 1/4 mile long with people trying to get extra copies of today’s newspaper. I am making my dad get me one, too 🙂

It is so surreal…I don’t feel like it’s real. I can’t wait to buy superbowl champs stuff. I am a nerd, that’s what I asked Bobby to get me for Valentine’s Day!

if you go to www.wdsu.com (NOLA local TV station) there are all kinda of pics and videos of the Saints, and one of them coming home to the airport and Sean Peyton is driving holding the lombardi trophy out his sunroof!

so superbowl is over, now, onto Mardi Gras! I bought this cookie cake today:

I am glad I ran yesterday morning, I got some energy out! I am a little sore today, so no workout. I will go to the gym tomorrow to cross train. I also ate pretty healthy today so I amkinda proud!

Here are a couple pics I took of the TV

yes yes I am a nerd. I was just SO excited.

Superbowl Baby!

It’s Super Sunday! I am SO STOKED my boys are in the Superbowl, for the first time ever!
Last weekend when I was at my parents it was just CrAzY down there. Everyone wore saints shirts, car flags flying, it was madness. You could just feel the excitement in the air. I woke up with a ton of energy, so I set out for my 8 mile run, by myself. I had all I needed and got in the car and drove 1 mile to the neighborhood my parents used to have a house in when we were trying to move up here permanently.

this is how gloomy it was.It was 32 degrees. It just LOOKS cold doesn’t it?

I started out, with my new iPhone playlist. It was SO COLD. I kept having flashbacks from the Disney half marathon!
I stopped to take this picture. It’s REALLY hard to see in the pic but if you look up on the second floor where the iron railings are, they had Christmas lights that spelled out “Who Dat?” It was awesome!

I did great till mile 6, and my hip started bugging me. At this point I had only walked once, up a huge hill. Then, I got a text from my mom telling me to check my e-mail. So I stopped and walked so I could check. The Email said…”Look what Dad wore to church! Go Saints! Who Dat?!?”

oh. my. gosh. He wore that to CHURCH?! I must say I was slightly embarassed…But I assume he was not the only one looking like that! I am telling you it’s crazy down there!

So, those were the only two times I stopped. I struggled with the last two miles, I don’t think I ate enough…I was getting weak…but I did it! I took this pic of my car and my awesome car flag!!!

so, tonight, when you are watching the game, you can think of me FREAKING out about the Saints!

Oh, I did take pics of my long sleeved awesome shirt I wear when it’s cold, but I took them with my regular camera and so I still need to upload. It will happen!!!

WHO DAT?!?
