Christmas Comes Early

Can’t believe we did it, but my mom and I put up Christmas decorations today! (All but the tree) We woke up to POURING down rain, and were feeling kind of gloomy and my mom’s arm was hurting so I wanted to take her mind off of it. I thought putting on some Christmas music and pulling everything out of the attic would take her mind off of hurting and cheer us up a little bit!

Side note, my dad is probably going to flip out when he gets home and see everything out here haha!

This is about half of it.

I know it’s a little early, but we needed the pick me up today. Plus, no way my mom can pull all of that stuff out alone, and my dad does not like doing it, and with Bobby and I going on our trip I needed to help before we leave, so today seemed like good a day as any!

Once we get the tree up I will take some more pictures, and then I can start wrapping presents!!

back to icing and stretching I go. I am determined to get better!!!

QOTD: When do you start putting up Christmas decorations?

16 Miles of Frustration

Ya….so…..yesterday was not so fun for me and Bobby. We had a very rough long run. If you have been reading my blog, you know I have been struggling with IT band issues for over a month. Well, you may also know we took off last week from long running hoping we would have a chance to heal up a little bit before attempting 16 miles.

I was actually pretty excited about this run because we were going to run along the lakefront and on the trace where I knew there would be tons of people biking and running and enjoying the day.

We got up at 7 hoping to get the run out of the way before lunch. We didn’t actually start running until almost 9 though due to a certain husband taking forever to get ready!

Anyway, we drove to the lakefront and I was pretty stoked about our beautiful scenery. If you are not familiar with Louisiana or New Orleans, here is a crash course. Go look at a map of the country or of Louisiana. You see the big lake in the bottom right part of the state? That’s Lake Ponchatrain. directly on the middle/south side of the lake is New Orleans. Directly on the north side of the lake is Mandeville. Connecting the two is the Causeway. It is a 24 mile bridge (longest bridge) and my family lives/I grew up in Mandeville close to the lake. On a clear day like yesterday, we could see across the water to some of the bigger buildings downtown.

Ok, now that you have had a quick history lesson, here are some pictures.

We started our run by running along the lakefront. Tons of people running, walking their dogs, etc.

If you look in the distance of this next one you can see the Causeway (the bridge)

Excited to tackle 16 miles!

We started off well and I felt like we could run forever. Then mile 2 hit, and I started to feel tightness in my leg. I ignored it and kept going. We then turned off onto another street and hit the Mandeville trailhead of the Tammany Trace. The trace is awesome. It goes on for miles and has several trailheads with bathrooms, water fountains, etc. There are trash cans and benches along the way and we felt very safe. There were tons of people on it, too! Here is the website: Tammany Trace.

After about a mile or so of being on the Trace, Bobby told me his foot was hurting him. Apparently he hurt it when he PR’d in the Jazz Half Marathon. He didn’t tell me, but it has been hurting him for two weeks. Great. We have my knee and his foot and we are only 3 miles into a 16 mile run. Our plan was to run to mile 8 and then turn around and run back to the car. We were both ok until about mile 6. Bobby stopped and wasn’t sure if he could continue. Crap. He was REALLY hurting. I was hurting too but not so bad that I couldn’t keep going. We took several walk breaks, and FINALLY made it to mile 8. We turned around and started heading back. This is when it got bad. My knee tightened up so much I was limping, as was Bobby. We must have looked so pathetic! the last 6 miles went on forever. We stopped every half mile to walk, stretch, etc. When we hit mile 13, we were walking more than we were running. Bobby would tell me to keep going and then I would and he would catch up. We went on in silence for a long time. at mile 14.5 we hit the first trailhead again and stopped to get water and Bobby went to the bathroom so I sat down. Big mistake. When we started going again, my pain had moved up to the side of my hip and I could barely walk. Bobby was practically dragging his leg behind him and I really was wondering how we were going to get back to the car. We hit the lakefront again and knew we had less than a mile to go. We walked. The whole last mile. I even had to stop a couple of times and just stand there because even walking was too painful. After 3 hours and 37 minutes, we made it to the car.

I really don’t know what to do. We still have 2 months until our race. We don’t know what’s wrong with Bobby’s foot, and I don’t know why my leg won’t heal. At this point, we may have to walk the whole stupid marathon. I am so angry and frustrated I can’t even explain it. I just want to be done with this race so I can say I did it, I accomplished my goal. I just hope I can make it to that day yesterday was the first day I TRULY doubted my ability to go 26.2 miles.

I think we are going to take a MONTH (yes a month) off of long running. We will pick up with 20 miles on December 11, then run 17 on the 18th, then 14 on the 26th, then 8 the week before the marathon. Are we crazy? is this a bad idea? I just feel I really need to heal….I will still run short distances during the week, maybe even up to 6-7 SLOW miles but nothing crazy. I was in so much pain yesterday, if I had to run 10 more miles to make 26, I would have had to quit. There is absolutely no way I could have finished.

Sorry to be such a downer but this is the reality of injury and marathon training! Trying to keep it real here Smile

QOTD: Any advice for me? What would you do if it were you in my situation?

Runner’s Wardrobe

Happy Weekend! Well, almost. I hope everyone is having a productive Friday afternoon! I have been semi-productive, which is better than not at all I guess!

Lately, it has become very apparent that my wardrobe is not exactly fashionable. Yes I bought a pair of cute brown boots I have worn over skinny jeans all of 3 times, but other than that, I pretty much live in one of two things: A pair of jeans and a race shirt, or sweatpants and a t-shirt. I never really thought about it as being strange, as my husband wears the same things, until this morning when I got dressed to go do some Christmas shopping. Without much thought I put on “the usual” and then realized that my “usual” is not very fashionable or dressy, or even dressy-casual.

DSC_0759

Silly me, I was trying to get the side of the pants where it says “LSU Tigers” but then I realized my shirt was covering up the L….good job Heather!

DSC_0761

So…anyway, I must admit, this is the most comfortable outfit ever! Also, what did I buy while I was out? A New Orleans Saints hoodie. Oh yes. More high fashion for me!

When I got home I decided to look through my closet and see what I had. (Remember, I am at my parents so I only have a handful of clothes here) The majority of my clothes are t-shirts with a few pairs of athletic shorts and sweatpants. I have a whole drawer of running skirts and tops, and I just bought a cold weather running zip up top. Wow. I have a problem! I haven’t worn khaki or black pants since the Spring, and now that I am working from home the only time I ever put on “real” clothes is to go to dinner or to the store, and even then it’s usually just a t-shirt. I am not saying this is a “problem” but I am slightly concerned at how boring my wardrobe is. I guess it is the runners plight! I have contemplated wearing my running skirts in public just to run around town, but I think my husband would kill me.

So, I have decided to put a plan into action. I am going to try really hard to be more aware of what I put on. When I wear jeans to dinner I am going to try to NOT wear a race shirt or anything dri fit.

I will NOT wear a running hat everywhere I go just so I don’t have to put makeup on.

I will NOT wear tennis shoes every day.

I will NOT wear my hair in a ponytail 7 days a week.

I will say it again, there is nothing wrong with wearing sweats or running clothes but if it’s everyday in my opinion there should be a little variety. I will admit to, as time consuming as it is to actually fix my hair, put on makeup and wear cute clothes…I feel much more self confident when I actually take the time to do it.

SO hopefully, when I post pictures of myself on here from now on, they won’t all be of me in running clothes, a hat, and a ponytail! Hold me to it! Yes, I am a proud runner, but I am also a 25 year old girl and it’s fun to be girly and sassy sometimes!

QOTD: What is your wardrobe like? Do you ever fall into the runner’s wardrobe trap?

Almost that time of year!

Is it really Thursday? My days are all messed up since I came back to my parents on a Tuesday and not a Sunday. So, today feels like a Tuesday not a Thursday? Got it? good.

When we were back home this weekend, I took a few pictures I forgot to post (oops) so I thought today would be a good day to share.

Tuesday Bobby and I were in the living room cleaning up when he looked in the backyard and saw two pretty deer. We get deer in our yard all the time (along with raccoons, possum, armadillos, etc.

After they ran off behind our neighbors fence, Bobby walked down to the end of the yard and caught a picture of both of them.

DSC_0751

I love that we have animals like that in our yard (except snakes, I HATE snakes!) Which is why I am excited our new neighborhood where we are building our house backs up to a national forest! With running trails!!! So excited.

Something else I did while back home in Mississippi was to pack up my Halloween decorations. how sad. I was barely there to enjoy them. I went ahead and burnt candles in my cute jack-o-lantern one last time.

DSC_0757

As sad as I was to put up Halloween decorations, I am SO excited to put up Christmas ones! In case you don’t know me well, I am obsessed with Christmas. Over the past few days decorations have started popping up all over the place! This is my favorite time of year, and I plan to enjoy every second of it!!!

I also went on a 1.5 mile walk with my mom and I did 15 minutes on the elliptical and did some strength training! (So far so good on my strength plan!)

QOTD: What is your favorite holiday and why?

Back to the Run

Happy Wednesday! it’s once again beautiful here! I started off the morning by going on a 3 mile run. I put heat on my leg before I ran and I am not sure if it helped or not, but I tried. It was great weather, the kind where it’s cold when you start but once you get going it feels great!

I will admit….I was starting to get a little burnt out on running right before my half marathon. Just feeling blah and not really into it. I think it’s a mixture of the fact that we have SO much going on right now, and I have been running a lot, too. Anyway, today felt great, I wanted to run. I stretched out my stride and kept a good pace. I really enjoyed it the whole time! well. almost.

My knee started getting tight at mile 1.5 and was hurting (just a little, nothing to make me have to stop) by mile 2. It wasn’t unbearable, just more annoying than anything. I did 3 miles in 30 minutes and felt great after. I am so used to running in the mornings now that I feel so sluggish if I don’t!

Anyway, I think I am getting back into the swing of it. I am going to be nice to my leg and cross train tomorrow, rest Friday, and tackle 16 miles on Saturday. I am ready for it!

I think after the marathon and then the half I am doing in February I am going to chill for awhile on distance running. I will run some shorter distances in the spring but other than that I am just going to run for fun. I think my body and brain really need to not be on a training schedule after all of this.

I enjoy running, but let’s be honest, being on a schedule makes it not quite as fun. So, I am back to the run for now, and then I will be back to the FUN run in the spring!!

Have a great afternoon!

QOTD: Do you get burnt out after training for too any things? How did you deal with it?

Fast Movers

Evening all! I am BACK in Louisiana. Crazy amount of travel lately! I literally live out of a suitcase. it’s very odd. Anyway, I am back, Bobby is back on the MS coast for work tomorrow and I will see him again Friday.

Our house is already coming along and it is feeling more real! I haven’t actually seen it yet but Bobby went Friday and today and they are moving very fast which, if you are from the south, you know is weird. We tend to do a lot of things a lot slower, so this is a pleasant surprise!

Here are a couple of before and after Friday and today shots for comparison. They cleared the lot:

In fitness news, I am hoping to go for an easy run tomorrow. I am still icing, rolling, etc. so hopefully I will be ok on this run. I NEED to be ok on this run or 16 Saturday will not be pretty.

I hope everyone has a great night!!!

QOTD: Have you ever built a house? Did you enjoy it?

Strength

Happy Monday! I hope everyone is having a good day so far. it is absolutely gorgeous here in Mississippi. I have been meaning to do a post on this topic, and since circumstances in my training have let me not run as much this week, I thought this was a good time.

I have been running a lot up until this week. Because of my marathon training schedule, I have ONLY been running. I used to cross train 1-2 times a week and do strength training at least one a week. That has sort of vanished in the past couple of months other than the occasional walk or doing a few push ups here and there.

In doing research on healing my IT band and in talking to experienced runners, I realized I need to strengthen my legs and glutes to help stabilize my leg. Not to mention, my arms are getting seriously flabby and my abs are non existent. I don’t really have a “plan” for this except to try and do a series of strength training exercises 3x’s a week. To be honest, I probably won’t do a whole lot with abs but will focus more on things to help my IT band and arms. I found a couple of YouTube videos I think will help me out. I would love to get some all over shape back and not just in my legs!

Also, today I tried to go for a VERY slow 2 mile run with a few walk breaks. I was going stir crazy, and wanted to see how my knee would do. It didn’t hurt, but it did get tight towards the end. I am starting to get really frustrated with this!

On a positive note, we are finally getting some fall colors in our trees around here.

ac703ee2

Also I had to wear pants and a long sleeved shirt to run. Bbbrrr!

846d2665

Ok, I am off to do some strength exercises. Please hold me accountable! I would love to make it to Christmas and say I really stuck with this!

QOTD: Do you strength or cross train? What are your favorite things to do for this?

Early Anniversary Cruise

I feel like I am losing my mind. No, not because I can’t run…well, yes because I can’t run, but that’s not what I am talking about. I can’t remember if I told yall or not…but if I did…sorry, you get to hear about it again! Bobby and I are going on a cruise as an early anniversary gift to ourselves. (Anniversary is January 6) I got a great unbelievable travel agent rate I could NOT pass up, and so we are heading to the Western Caribbean for a 7 night Disney cruise! I am so excited, life has been a mess lately and so it will be nice to get away before the madness of Christmas, the marathon, and our house being built/finished.

We will be sailing on the Magic, which I have not been on before.

disney_magic

We will be in an oceanview room, not sure the room number yet. (actually annoyed I am still having to wait!)

We will leave a day early and spend the night halfway down (we are driving) and then we will get to the port early so we can hopefully get on the ship early!

Our cruise is going to Key West, (never been) Grand Cayman, (never been) Cozumel (have been) and Castaway Cay (have been twice.)

rd7nightmainimgwest

We have decided on Key West we will walk around on our own and site see, not sure about Grand Cayman yet, and we are heading back to paradise Beach on Cozumel.

Here are a couple pics I took almost 3 years ago at Paradise beach:

ImportedPhotos00192

I was ssooo sunburned. Look on the edges of my arm along my halter top line and underneath. Ouch! Caribbean sun on the water = sunburn.

ImportedPhotos00189

I am also super excited about something most would find silly…Formal night! I LOVE dressing up and I have all my old college formals and am hoping to still fit into one to wear to dinner. You will just have to wait and see. Smile

I am so excited to be able to go on this trip with my SLR and take some awesome pictures to help me with booking cruises for my clients! (Did you know I am a travel agent? check out the travel quote tab at the top of my blog.)

I am still resting…doing strength for my legs and arms but no running yet. I MIGHT test it out with a walk run tomorrow of a mile or two and just see if it tightens up. But now, I must ice and go watch the Saints game. I hope everyone has a great Sunday!

QOTD: Have you been to Key West or Grand Cayman? What are some must do things to do or see? (We are thinking beach on Grand Cayman?)

First Frost

Happy Saturday! It’s ccccooolllddd here! As I drove home yesterday, the temperature kept dropping and dropping as I headed north. Glad I wore this and not shorts and a t-shirt!

DSC_0735

Hello!

DSC_0732

The puppies also wore their winter clothing

DSC_0739

I must admit, it is really weird being back “home.” The house is very bare and after being gone two weeks it was just strange! Bobby got in and we went to the chiropractor then ate Mexican. Yum!!! This morning we got up early to go back to the chiropractor and get groceries. This is that I found when I looked outside at 8:00 this morning.

DSC_0737

Frost!!!

DSC_0738

Time to bust out the flannel.

DSC_0741

All of my sweaters are in the attic. When I went to my parents house two weeks ago I brought shorts and tank tops. no lie. It was humid and in the upper 80’s. Where did fall go? Looks like we may have skipped straight to winter!

Today I was supposed to run 16 miles. Thanks to my uncooperative body, I am not. I decided after much fighting with myself about it that I would sit today out to try and heal my IT band. I am doing everything I can to take care of and strengthen it. I still have plenty of time to run a 16, 18, 20, and another 16, but I can’t miss any more long runs, so hopefully it will start behaving for next week. I logged VERY few miles this week and I am not all that happy about it. It is really kind of stressing me out to tell you the truth. I know I should be running, but I’m not, and I feel like I am losing fitness everyday. It is so frustrating!!! I keep trying to tell myself I need to take care of my body so I can even run the dang marathon.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a good day. I am so ready for the LSU game. It is going to be a good one!

QOTD: Have you ever been sidelined with an injury? How did it make you feel if you were training for a race?

What’s Your Excuse?

Ok. I get it. Everyone loves having an excuse. My alarm didn’t go off. My dog got out. I am tired. I am busy. My in-laws are coming over. My house caught on fire. (Ok, so maybe the last one is a good excuse!)

We all do it. What exactly am I referring to? Exercise. Movement. Doing something with your body. We make excuses all the time for why we CAN’T go for a run, head to the gym, meet our neighbor for a walk. Sometimes I have to step back and see if my excuses are legitimate of not. I think we are SO good at making ourselves BELIEVE we have a good excuse, that we just sit there and convince ourselves we are doing the right thing.

Does life sometimes just get in the way and you don’t have time or energy to exercise, of course. But, if that is happening every day, or even most days, in my opinion there is a problem!

When I think back over the past week, month, etc. and count the times I didn’t work out, or I cut a workout short, nine times out of ten it was uncalled for. Laziness is my problem sometimes, and I think it can plague us all at one point or another.

Why am I rambling on about this? Well, because the holidays are hurling towards us faster than you may realize. Halloween has come and gone, and Thanksgiving is on it’s way. I don’t know about you, but for me this is the month I start to get crazy busy and things like workouts fall to the wayside.

Granted, I am battling an injury, so I may not be running as much as usual, I still want to keep my strength and fitness up and NOT make excuses for myself over the next two months.

My Junior year of high school my basketball team adopted the motto of “no excuses.” I have decided to use that as my mantra until my full marathon (except for the REAL excuses like injury, sickness, etc.)

What about you? Do you ever just not feel like going to the gym, but instead of just admitting that to yourself you say something like I have to make finger foods for the office Christmas party tomorrow.

Take a look….both of these men could easily have some very good excuses for not running….(this is an old picture.)

bush_jogging

What is your excuse again?

QOTD: What is your most commonly used excuse when it comes to running/working out?
