RWS Features: Tanya from Vegan Faith

 

I am so excited about today’s gust post! It comes from Tanya at Vegan Faith. I was blessed to get to spent a good amount of time with Tanya at Helathy Living Summit. She is so sweet and easy to talk to! Her story below is very honest, and very touching. It does deal with relationships with food, so if this is touchy or a trigger for you, please proceed with caution.

A big thanks to Heather for sharing her space on Running With Sass, with me! I blog at VeganFaith.com and I am so excited to be over here today to tell you my story. The really neat thing today, is that this is a brand new story. And one that I have been dying to share for a while now.

For many years I have struggled with disordered eating and low self-esteem. I have never suffered from a diagnosed eating disorder such as binging or purging, but have simply had an unhealthy relationship with food (let’s be honest…what is so simple about that?)

From the time I learned what a calorie was, or even how much sugar or fat or carbs were contained in certain products, I have obsessed over the food I put in my body. It began as a wholesome effort to eat better and more compassionately. But like many things in life, a good thing easily became a bad thing. I restricted my diet to extremes, and then when off the “diet” I would just eat everything in sight.

Throughout each day, I would agonize over the hours. When was my next meal? And what would I eat. I became fanatical as I waited in anticipation for noon each day, just so I could eat again. Meal times were engraved in my mind, and I couldn’t eat outside of those times. I forgot how to eat intuitively and began living only for the rules I created. Many foods were off limits and deemed “bad.” Guilt was associated with eating these “bad” foods. My happiness was determined by the type of food I ate each day.

An unhealthy relationship with food is a slippery slope. You think you are doing great things for your body, and in the end you find yourself in a hot mess. That is where I found myself earlier this year. Consumed by my consumption. Sliding down the slope happened so quickly, yet climbing my way back out is taking much longer.

The first step for recovery for me was relinquishing control over the situation. For me, that was releasing it into God’s hands. Acknowledging he was Lord over all, including my disordered eating. I knew that there was no way I could dig my way out of this one, and I needed a stronger, more able entity. For me, there was no one but God to help me out.

Of course I had to do my part. I had to pray, and continuously remind myself that all things are possible through God who strengthens me. Even in my darkest moments, I needed hope. And I needed to take baby steps to set new habits in place.

Those baby steps will be different for everyone, for me it was listening to my body and breaking the rules. Those same rules that I thought were in place to help guide me, but ultimately steered me in the wrong direction. If I was hungry, I needed to eat. No matter what time of day it was. And when I ate, I needed to stop after a portion, and wait. Sometimes I would drink a glass of water, or sit at the table for at least 5 minutes before getting up. Those new habits helped me to listen to my body to find out if I really was still hungry and needed a larger portion, or if my stomach was full and it was time to move on.

All year I have worked at these new habits, and just recently I have recognized how far I have come. This is what makes my story new. While I still struggle with some of those old temptations, I am better equipped to fight them. I have several Action Mantras that get me through dark periods:Table, Plate, Chair” “Make an Effort, Not Excuses” or “Social Sweets Only.” But now my all-encompassing theme is this: “Grace and Consistency.” In everything in life I simply try my best to be consistent and when that isn’t enough, I have grace.

Rather than beat myself up over a missed workout or an unhealthy meal, I use grace to allow myself to take a break. I cut myself slack with a reminder that one day will not change the course of my life. What I may fall short on today, there will always be tomorrow. I look at the overall picture saying to myself “Today I may not fit in a workout, but this week I made it to the gym 4 times!” or “Right now I am going to enjoy TCBY with friends, and then later I will nourish my body with lots of whole grains and greens!”

Now I am in a much happier place. Food isn’t my enemy, rather a passion that I continue to pursue and enjoy. I no longer dread exercise, but look forward to it as one of the best parts of my day. I have no regrets that I went through this experience. I have grown as a person, a believer, and a friend. It has made me more aware and compassionate of others who struggle with similar issues. And it has brought me closer to my passion for a healthy life.

On Vegan Faith I share my life and the healthy choices I make every day. Some are healthy for my body (fruits and veggies), and many are healthy for my soul (daily Bible devotions). Meanwhile, there are also those choices that are just healthy for my sanity…like the delicious cupcake I ate yesterday after the 5k! For me it is all about living my life with Grace and Consistency.

RWS Features: Greg’s Inspirational Story

 

Today’s guest post stems  from an e-mail I received from Greg. It touched my heart so much I asked if I could share his story here on RWS. It is so inspiring, I hope you are just as motivated as I was after reading it!

It all started back in high school at the age of 16 when I joined my local volunteer fire department and met all my friends whom, like me, spent almost every free hour at the station, hanging around, going on calls and such. What this also brought me was to eat out almost 6 days a week multiple meals a day, and lets just say it wasn’t healthy establishments we chose to dine at. With this, my awful eating habits began and spiraled way out of control. By the time I began reaching my mid 20s, I was well over 200 lbs and my weight was climbing steadily.

My weight kept me from realizing some personal dreams like military service amongst others. As my weight began to climb, I began to hate myself and fell into a deep depression, and I continued to turn to food to in a way ease the pain. I had tried all the fad diets, and they had worked but once I stopped the weight came back and seemed like it did with a vengeance. At my heaviest I was 331 lbs and around that time I started noticing (don’t ask what took so long) little things were becoming a lot harder for me.

I had health issues like cholesterol, high blood pressure and an elevated heart rate. Finally one day I bent over to tie my boots up and I came back up and was completely out of breath. I remember that day like it was yesterday, and after that I crawled in my truck and drove around for 2 straight hours thinking about my life and all things I wanted to do and still want and how my weight and unhealthy lifestyle weren’t going to allow it. The very next day I began a diet which consisted of a few different things I had learned from previous diets. The diet began to work and I started feeling better day by day week by week.

Around this time, I discovered Heathers blog I believe through the disboards. Her blog became an almost daily read for me because her words reached out to me about her running and her outlook on life and all its challenges. She truly inspired me in a way to set my own goals and to treat this diet and life change as a challenge. I began running and working out twice sometimes three times a day and eating around 1200 calories a day. In roughly 7 months I went from 331 pounds and not being able to run from telephone pole to telephone pole, to now weighing 221 pounds and running 2 miles in under 16 minutes, my cholesterol and BP are perfect and my resting heart rate is 54!

I proudly serve in the US Army National Guard as a combat medic, and have recently followed another dream and moved to Florida to begin working at Disney world as a monorail pilot. I have set my next goals in life and that is to run for distance and complete a 1/2 and full marathon by my 30th birthday and become a police officer.

I reached out to Heather a few days ago to thank her for the small but not insignificant role she played in turning my life around. She asked me to share my story and at work last night I decided if my story helps one persons life the way Heathers blog helped mine it was worth doing.

In hopes that my stories, tips, and life lessons will help to motivate and inspire, even if it’s just that one person, then it is so worth it to me. Blast from the Past…Again

 

Hi everyone! If you have been following RWS, you know that every so often I like to look back on what I was doing a year ago. I think it is so important on our journey’s to health to look back and see how far we have come! Also, it is just plain fun. So….A year ago this week….

I was in DISNEYWORLD! So…I went forward a few days since, well, I didn’t post when I was in Disney last year. So, fudging a little…here we are!

You Are What You Eat

This was a very “a ha” moment for me in my journey to health. Of course in the back of my mind I always knew the better you eat the better your body will feel, but it took eating like crap in Disneyworld and coming back and trying to run to REALLY make me see. Funny how personal experience will do that to you, huh? Now, don’t get me wrong, I will most likely eat like crap in WDW when I go on vacation. BUT, I will also have realistic expectations of what my runs will be like when I get home, and get myself on a plan to get back to my healthy eating ways.

People tell me all the time “I am too tired to workout, if I had more energy, I would do it.” I want to shake them and say IF YOU WORKOUT YOU WILL HAVE MORE ENERGY! Of COUSE you don’t want to workout. If you drink coke at every meal, and a bunch of food coma inducing, processed foods, you are going to feel like crap and not want to do anything that doesn’t involve the couch and a TV remote.

If you force yourself to the gym, even when you feel like crap from unhealthy food, you will most likely feel BETTER after, and then the cycle starts of wanting to workout more, and wanting toe at better. once you get a taste of those exercise endorphins it’s hard to go back to feeling blah when you know how good you COULD feel.

So, stop making excuses. There is a reason you feel yucky and tired. Today is a new day, start your new path TODAY! Go for a walk, ride your bike, do some jumping jacks. Get your blood flowing! You will be feeling better in no time.

Friday Favorites: Running Skirts Performance Tank

 

Hellllooooo. It’s almost the weekend again! That means it’s time for another Friday Favorites post from yours truly. This week, I am talking Running Skirts (again) what’s new right? I just can’t get enough of this stuff. I am sure you have seem me wearing these tops in many many pictures on RWS. Here are a few:

I looovvveeee this tank. It is SUPER light weight, and sweat wicking. I like that it is a little bit looser, it is very freeing feeling when you are running in it. Not to mention, they come in a ton of super cute colors.  These tops are great for any sport, no just running. You could easy play basketball, do yoga, or go biking in this versatile top!

This top hips at your hips, is very breathable,  and keeps me cool and comfy. I wear a medium in the top because I have a long torso. They are especially great for women who want to wear the cute coordinating colors with their running skirt, but they want a little more modesty and coverage with their shirt/top. I love the Running skirts Strappy tank as well, but that’s for another post. Smile

The Boys of Fall

 

If you have known me for any length of time, you know I am a huge football fan. More specifically, the “Bayou Bengals” LSU Tigers, and the “WHO DAT” New Orleans Saints. Growing up in South Louisiana, going to many Saints games, it is just in my blood. Through thick and thin, bags covering our heads, to super bowl champs, I love football. On Sunday, my husband knows better than to to try carry on a conversation with me unless it’s in between the late game and the Sunday night game. It is THAT bad. We rush home from church to catch kickoff, and I refused to go to a Super bowl party when the Saints won 2 years ago because I didn’t want anyone to talk to me, so I could focus on the game. Awful, right? I think I was supposed to be a boy. But I don’t like mud. yuck.

Saturday is all about college Game Day and afternoon naps. There is just something about taking a nap with football on in the background. Oh, and There is ALWAYS someone playing you can cheer for (GO SEC!) When I am in Disney world and one of my teams is playing, you bet I will LEAVE whatever park I am in to go watch the game. On our honeymoon, we watched the Saints in the playoffs with Wishes fireworks going on outside our window. Best. night. ever.

You can bet when I pack my suitcase for my upcoming trip it will have Saints Jerseys and LSU t-shirts for game day, and the days after. I find it hilarious that I like football more than my husband, and he played the dang sport for like 10 years! So you can bet when I found this clip from Ellen, that I just HAD to share it with you guys. I have watched it three times and it puts me into hysterical laughing fits every time.

HILARIOUS! I am so excited to see where the Saints will go this year, and how LSU will do missing our starting quarterback, eekk! Doing ok so far! Check out these past posts I have done on the Saints to see how deep my obsession goes:

Bobby refers to Drew Brees as my boyfriend. Seriously. He will ask “so what time does your boyfriend play today?” and I know exactly what he means. Smile I did a review on his book Coming Back Stronger also. I wrote more posts about the Saints, but those are the best ones.  Football is one of the reasons I just love fall. Now if only the weather would drop below 90 degrees…

Last night Bobby and I had to deal with some personal issues I can’t really talk about, so we were to drained to go to the gym so we took the pups on a nice long walk instead. So what if I am taking it easy this week. I could use a good cut back week.

Power of Positive

 

Happy hump day! Hi to any new readers out there! Thanks to some amazing bloggers who promoted my raffle, I hit an all time high of page views yesterday! (If you haven’t entered to win some awesome prizes and raise money for cancer research, check out my raffle page/post here.)

Today I want to chat a little bit about the power of positive thinking. Did you know that YOU are the only one who can change your attitude? I will say it again in case you are a super speed reader and didn’t really catch it. You are the only one who can change your attitude. Think about it. Yes, people say and do things to INFLUENCE you to change your mindset, but you have the control over how you RESPOND to you circumstances. Yes friends, the key lies in the response.

When you have a crappy morning run, when you get in a fight with your spouse, when you are sidelined with an injury, when someone says something hurtful to you, or when a family member is in the hospital, you have a CHOICE as to how you respond. As humans, our natural reaction is anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, and negativity.

It takes a conscience effort to say “I am NOT going to let this ruin my day.” Sometimes, I say it through gritted teeth, but truly, I have learned, that even if you are joyful, even when circumstances are crummy, that your outlook on life is much, much better. Hear me. I am not saying you should make light of a serious problem or issue, ignore something or someone, or pretend everything is ok. You can acknowledge a crappy circumstance, and then choose to not let it rattle you.

If you stop for a moment and count your blessings, or think “is this REALLY worth upsetting my whole day,” 9 times out of 10…probably not. ESPECIALLY in situations that we have no control over. Why have anxiety over something that you can’t change? Will anxiety add a single moment to your life? Will it change the circumstance, or just stress you out more?

The next time something happens, instead of the knee jerk reaction of pouting, getting angry, anxious, or negative, try to replace those feelings with positive ones. I woke up today, breathing. I have a family that loves me. I have sweet fur babies who think I am the best mom ever. I have a job I love. The weather outside is beautiful. Laugh. volunteer. Hug a puppy. (not too tightly.) Whatever it is that will help exchange the negative for joy, say it, repeat it, do it.

Some of my personal favorite phrases that exchange the negative for the positive are….

I will not let  ___________ win/steal my joy.

– I am the only one who can change my attitude

-I am stronger than I think

-Worrying will not fix this or add a single second to my life

-God is in control, and He is way more capable than I am of handling this.

-This too shall pass

Changing you attitude to one of gratitude, positivity, hope, and joy, can really make things a lot more bearable. It has helped me get though many less than ideal situations in my life, and I hope it helps you, too! I have this paper pinned up on my bulletin board in my office as a reminder:

I encourage you to print out your own helpful phrase. Or, write it on your mirror in an ugly color of lipstick you will never wear. (come on don’t pretend you don’t have those free samples shoved in a drawer somewhere!) Stick it on the refrigerator. Somewhere that will help you remember that you are in control of how you view things. Choose to be positive!!!

Last night Bobby and I went on a hilly 3 miler, and I felt really good! I think my hard work is finally starting to pay off. That first picture of me in the grey top is pre run. I actually felt like giving a thumbs up AFTER the run, too! Great confidence booster!

I got this for completing 2 Rock n Roll events in a year. I will be running Rock n Roll Savannah, so I will get another medal as well after that one, woot! I love me some bling! I can’t wait to hang it up on my new sport hook rack! (If Bobby would ever hang it up. ahem….)

Yesterday, I did a lot of catching up on household things I neglected over the weekend, like dishes. oy. It was nice out, so I opened the window, and Bella enjoyed her perch for the morning.

I did level 1 of 6 weeks to 6 pack too. I honestly haven’t done this video since May when I completed the full 6 week program. I got SO burnt out on it, I didn’t want to even look at the cover of the DVD box! I also did some foam rolling and stretching, which I neglected this weekend.

Today it is back to the gym and back to the run for me. I have to head to my parents house later this week for something, so I plan on doing my long run there for a change of scenery. Will be interesting! I feel like I am starting to gain a little bit of speed. My IT band still hurts like the dickens after a long run, but seems to do ok during my runs, so hopefully it will hold up for me. It is usually just sore right after I run and is gone the next day. Weird.

Ok, more laundry awaits. I can promise you I won’t be doing any of this:

In case you didn’t know, I despise ironing. Really. It’s way too much work for something that’s just going to get wrinkled when I sit down. I do it only when absolutely necessary. If I iron for an event you are attending, then you can rest assured I think you are really really special.

Growing up, I always heard my parents and people their age (you know, old. Just kidding!) talk about where they were when Kennedy got shot. Obviously, I wasn’t born yet, and so I couldn’t really share in the conversations. However, I vividly remember where I was on September 11, 2001.

I was a Junior in High school, and I think I was in 2nd hour. We were in the middle of a lecture, when another teacher came in and pulled my teacher aside and whispered something in his ear. Our teacher then told us a plane had crashed into the WTC, and at first we thought it was a joke and didn’t believe him. Then, he pulled out the TV and I think later went home to find some rabbit ears so we could watch the news.

I just remember sitting in my desk being in shock, a little scared, and wanting to call and talk to my family. Here we were, just going about our morning routine, while our fellow Americans were dying in awful and scary ways. I prayed a lot that day, for the families, for President Bush, for the nation. I cannot believe it has been ten years since that awful day.

I am very patriotic, and so proud to be an American. It angers me beyond belief that this happened on our soil. It was a scary wake up call that no one is truly ever “safe” in your home, at work, on a plane, etc. In my opinion, the only TRUE safety and security is found in my relationship with the Lord. I believe HE is in control, and though tragedy may happen, He already knows how it all turns out, and whatever happens to me today, tomorrow, or 10 years from now, I don’t have to live in fear or anxiety. It is SUCH a freeing feeling!

I get choked up thinking about that sad day, and about all of the innocent lives lost, the families that lost their loved ones. I pray they have found hope and comfort over the years, and will remember that we have not forgotten about them, or their loved ones.

Ok, I need to move on or I am going to turn into an emotional wreck.Smile

Yesterday morning, Bobby and I were up at the crazy hour of 4:45 so we could meet with our Team in Training group for an 8 mile long run along the beach boardwalk and out and back over the crazy steep Ocean Springs Bridge.

It was nice having low humidity and temps in the upper 60’s to start, even though later the sun was beating down and it got well into the 70’s. we actually had a good run, completing 8 miles in 1:20:00. We came home, and immediately got to work staining our back fence. We have had the stain since we moved in 6 months ago (can you BELIEVE it’s been 6 months?!) but it has been way too hot to get out there and do it. It will take weeks to get it done, but we got a good start today!

I made Bobby paint with the Disney paint brush. Because of this, I got a hidden Mickey from him. I guess the brush has a mind of it’s own?

Apparently I am also very sloppy. Oops. I look like I have chicken pox!

(fun fact: I got chicken pox when I was 5 or 6, a day or two before I was supposed to get my tonsils out. I was so happy b/c I thought this meant my tonsils could stay in….well…not so much. Also, I have a bunch of chicken pox scars, mainly on my hands/arms.)
