Pregnancy Update: Week 29

Hello last week of my 20’s (and last year of my 20’s!) Fun fact: I was 28 weeks pregnant at age 28, and 29 weeks pregnant at age 29. How cool is that? It’s the little things.

This past week was quite the whirlwind, and not going to lie I have been a little overwhelmed. Still waiting for a few things to fall into place then I can share some fun news with you all.

Symptoms: This is the first week since my first trimester that I felt like my hormones were all over the place. I am sure a lot has to do with all of the thing we are going through right now other than me being pregnant, but I found myself just wanting to burst into tears a few times this past week, which was definitely odd because I was aware it was happening, but there was still nothing I could do about it.

Trying to pack up an entire house in your third trimester is not recommended. Talk about exhausted and sore! I almost fell asleep at the dinner table. My feet hurt like they do when I run a marathon, and my back and hips were throbbing after the two days we packed up the house. it had to be done though, and I am glad we got it over with, and I can unpack at a much slower pace. It’s been so hot here, and I have started noticing swelling in my feet. I am trying to elevate them, wear compression socks, and drink lots of water but haven’t noticed a ton of difference yet.

Still feeling lots of kicks, jabs and rolls, and I have another appointment next Monday with my doctor. This two week business makes me feel like I am always there!

Baby’s Size: Acorn squash (what the heck is that?)

Maternity Clothes: None, and hopefully no more. I don’t want to spend money on them at this point, so I apologize because you will see me wear the same things over and over for 2.5 more months!

Stretch Marks: Not that I can see, but I did have a nightmare this week that I got them all over my biceps and triceps, how weird is that?

Sleep: Sleep was really bad at the beginning of the week, but the past 2-3 nights have been much better. I am still getting up 2-4 times a night to go to the bathroom, but I am falling back asleep easier than I was before.

Miss Anything: Energy, feeling like “me”. The old me would have had no problem working hard packing up the house, and it’s been hard accepting limitations.

Cravings: Carbs and sugar. How healthy! I do eat sugar every day but try to limit it to a snack after dinner, and with my iced coffee.

Aversions: I just feel blah in general certain days to food, but then sometimes I am really hungry. I will never understand.

I did however eat a lot of cake last weekend.

Looking Forward to: Getting some things settled in our personal lives, which should happen by the end of July.

What I’m Loving: Setting up our newborn photography session! My birthday present from Bobby.

Workouts: Packing for two days was pretty brutal, then I rested Friday and had baby shower and birthday Saturday/Sunday, traveled home Monday, rained all day Tuesday. Hope to get in a walk today!

Garmin Forerunner 15 Review

I was recently contacted by Garmin about testing out the new Forerunner 15 model GPS watch. I lloovveee me some Garmin (I have the 10, Bobby has one, and I have the super old school 301). I was very interested to see the differences especially between the 10 and the 15 models.

I was sent the Teal/White watch with heart rate monitor. The color is really cute!

Here are a few features of the Forerunner 15 from Garmin’s website:

  • Tracks distance, pace, heart rate and calories
  • Activity tracking counts steps and calories and reminds you when it’s time to move
  • Compatible with foot pod (sold separately) for recording distance indoors
  • Up to 8 hours of battery life with GPS on or 5 weeks in watch/activity tracking mode
  • Save, plan and share your activities at Garmin Connect™

You can pair the Garmin with a heart rate strap (you can purchase the device with or without) and it will record your heart rate and heart rate zone so you know when you need to rein it in and when you can push yourself harder.

The coolest new feature of the Forerunner 15 is the activity tracker. You can track the steps you take during the day, even when you aren’t working out, and you can do so without havening to wear a separate device. Forerunner 15 counts your steps and the calories you burn all day. You can also upload you data to Garmin Connect, and monitor your progress toward your fitness goals. This device also reminds you when it’s time to move if you’ve been sitting for more than an hour. When you get that cue to move, just walk for a couple of minutes to reset the inactivity indicator. How neat is that?!?

Forerunner 15 also has an auto lap function that automatically alerts you when you complete each mile. When you complete your run and save it, you’ll see a summary of how you did (calories, pace, time, distance). It even lets you know when you achieve a personal record, like your fastest mile or longest run to date.

For outdoor runs, Forerunner 15 uses GPS to accurately record your time, pace and distance. To track distance and pace when you hit the treadmill or an indoor track, just pair Forerunner 15 with an optional foot pod, which attaches to the laces of your shoe.

Another favorite about this model in comparison to the Garmin 10 is the battery life. The rechargeable battery will last up to 5 weeks in watch/activity tracking mode or 8 hours when using it with GPS on your outdoor runs. This is a vast improvement over the 10 which only had a 5 hour battery life. I also love that I can wear it for FIVE WEEKS as a watch in activity mode and without recharging! I don’t plan to even need GPS for more than 8 hours at a time, so the battery life is perfect for me. Forerunner 15 has a water rating of 5 ATM (50 meters), which means it resists rain and sweat and can even join you for a swim.

After a run, use Garmin Connect to log your runs on your computer. Here, you can see your run on a map, get more detail on each mile, see a daily summary of your activities and share with friends. You can also join online challenges and earn virtual badges for extra motivation. This model also can auto sync information to your computer unlike the Forerunner 10.

So to recap, the main differences in the Forerunner 10 and 15:

Forerunner 10: No activity tracker, no heart rate monitor, less battery life (5 hours in GPS mode)

Forerunner 15: Activity tracker, optional heart rate monitor and foot pod, longer battery (8 hours GPS mode, 5 weeks activity tracker mode).

Both models have the run/walk interval options, a virtual pacer, and you can also customize the screens on both watches. The Forerunner 10 is priced at $129.99, and the 15 starts at $169.99 for the watch only, and $199.99 with the heart rate monitor.

Other things I love:

-Colors are varied and really cute

-Price point is reasonable and especially great for a first GPS watch.

-Size is nice, small enough to wear as a regular watch!

-Easy to use, minimal buttons and screens

-Easy of setup, I was out the door in three minutes the first time I turned it on!

My ONLY qualm with this model of GPS device is not being able to see pace, time, and distance all on one screen. When racing or trying to hit certain goals, I don’t really like having to scroll to another screen to see all of my data. However, on the flip side, it has kept me from wanting to constantly check my numbers, which can actually be a good thing sometimes.

Overall I would recommend this Garmin, especially now that it can be worn as a watch and has the activity tracker! They just keep getting better and better with technology, it blows me away.

A Full Weekend

Good morning! What a whirlwind of a weekend! We packed at our old house Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning, drove to my parents house in Louisiana Friday, had my baby shower Saturday, and my birthday Sunday! It was an exhausting but wonderful weekend with great food, friends, and fun! I go back home tomorrow, and will be doing a full baby shower recap this week, but for today just thought I would give you a peek at the fun! The hostesses did an amazing job, and Karen handmade so many amazing decorations and is so talented!

The same lady who made my cake for the gender reveal party made my shower cake. It was beautiful and tasted so delicious. It had almond in it, so it tasted like a wedding cake.

I have plenty more to show you and share, so stay tuned! The shower was so much fun and I had a great relaxing birthday yesterday as well.

Good morning! Thank you everyone for your great responses to my post yesterday about the glucose test! It was definitely an interesting experience and I’m so glad to see I’m not alone.

Yesterday was a bit of a wild day, we are at our old house packing up because we FINALLY SOLD IT! That’s right, after 27 months our house sold and we have to be out by the end of the month. It’s a very long story that I really want to share with you once we get everything moved. I feel bad, almost like I have hidden from you guys a lot of what has been going on, but there is a reason, and I can’t wait to share the story soon.

Anyway, we spent a couple hours Wednesday night and all day yesterday packing and we still aren’t done. Thank goodness for my mom and Bobby’s mom that came and helped us or we would be in trouble. Can I just say packing while in your third trimester is not fun? By the end of the day, I was so sore and tired I couldn’t hold my eyes open at dinner and was in bed at 7:30!

I wore my fitbit from staples, and I walked over 10,000 steps yesterday without even leaving the house. How crazy is that? Let’s just say I went up and down the stairs at least 50 times and boy am I feeling it!

I’m really ready to get finished up here and head to my parents because Karen and her husband come into town today for my baby shower that is tomorrow! Not to mention, Sunday is my birthday, so it’s sure to be a fun weekend! I will blog all about it next week and will have pictures from the shower.

I Failed…but it’s ok

Well, you may remember awhile back I said I was having my glucose test done at the doctor. I was nervous, but not because I thought I would fail…just nervous I would get sick or pass out, but failing wasn’t really on my radar.

I timidly drank the orange drink, waiting for the awful taste and nausea, neither of which came. I had to laugh, it just tasted like orange soda to me and didn’t make me sick at all, nothing to worry about right? That is until my doctor walked in and told me I failed with a 154 (needed to be below 140). I held back the tears as she told me I didn’t do anything wrong, but I couldn’t help it.

Baby M isn’t even here yet and I felt like a failure. I know it may seem silly, but I’m just being real here. That day was not so good, I cried a couple times and was pretty upset about having to take the 3 hour (I had heard even more horror stories). I decided to not share on my blog until after the results from the three hour.

I showed up at the lab after fasting for 12 hours (brutal!) and hadn’t first of four blood draws, then double the amount of my orange soda 🙂

Every hour for 3 hours they took more blood, and while I was very hungry and bored, it wasn’t that bad. Again no passing out or sickness thank goodness. That was the Tuesday before July 4th. I never got a call about my results, so when I has my appointment this past Monday I assumed she would tell me. Well, she didn’t have the results yet! More waiting, I just wanted to know.

I finally got a call on Tuesday afternoon saying I passed with flying colors! What a huge relief. It’s a bit confusing how I failed one so badly, but I am just glad the ordeal is over.

If I has failed it would have been no fun, but I would have managed it for my health and baby M’s health. It’s so strange though how my immediate reaction was that of failure. Diabetes runs in my family, but I just didn’t think about any of that.

Luckily before I got the second results I had forced myself to be ok with whatever happened, and to have a good attitude about it. However, I am so glad I passed! So ladies, if you fail the one hour don’t fret, apparently a lot of people do then go on to pass the next one.

You are not a failure just because you failed! If anyone has questions about the testing I would be glad to try to answer!

Pregnancy Update: Week 28

Hello third trimester! What a fun milestone to hit. I can confirm that the “honeymoon” phase of the 2nd tri is OVER and I am getting more uncomfortable every day. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful to have no serious complications so far, but I also underestimated back pain, inability to sleep, and other things that come along with this stage of pregnancy.

This is the face of someone who slept 2 hours the night before. Oy.

On Monday I had another appointment, and even an ultrasound. The tech was really great and spent a lot of time with me pointing things out, and just letting me see baby girl move around. She had her hands up by her face, feet up by her head, and was sticking her tongue out. I feel so much better after seeing her again and knowing she’s still ok.

Interesting development, baby M is measuring ahead! Like, almost two weeks ahead! The day of the appointment I was 27 weeks 6 days, and I am measuring 29 weeks four days. No wonder I feel so big! I wasn’t a big baby and neither was Bobby, so we will see what happens as we get closer.

Symptoms: Swelling (wedding ring has officially moved to my pinky) insomnia, sore back, round ligament pain, tiredness, hip pain, heartburn, hard to eat a lot of food at once/feeling very full quickly, just general uncomfortable-ness. Carrying around this extra weight has started taking it’s toll, and it’s quite humbling to be honest.

Maternity Clothes: Nothing new

Stretch Marks: Nothing new, but belly has been a little itchy lately.

Sleep: Oh boy. Not good. Two nights ago was the worst. Felt asleep at 10:45, woke up at 12:45, was up till 4:45, took a short “nap” until just after 5. I was a zombie all day, I couldn’t thing straight and it made me sick to my stomach. Really hoping I can sleep tonight! Between the insomnia and getting up to go to the bathroom and waking up sweating it has been a long week.

Miss Anything: sslleeeppp, however I know this will only get worse Smile

Cravings: Just sweets and cold things in this hot weather. Oh, also cheese.

Aversions: Large meals of any kind. A lot of snacking happening in the Montgomery house.

Looking Forward to: My BABY SHOWER Saturday!

What I’m Loving: Hitting that third trimester milestone really takes some of the pressure and worry off. I am loving feeling not QUITE so stressed about health of baby M this week.

Workouts: Two walks this week, I have been focusing on yoga and stretching as well as some lunges, squats, leg lifts etc. while I watch tv. I have been feeling it in my hips the next day!

Anyone else look like a tomato after running outside?

Here are a few of my best pointers for warm weather running:

1.) Sunscreen:  no matter if it’s cloudy or not. It’s just not worth the risk guys. Be sure to reapply if you are doing a super long workout!

2.) Go early or late: Try not to wait until the sun is high in the sky, either workout in the morning or late evening to avoid the hottest temps and the suns rays.

3.) Dress appropriately: Sweat wicking materials are best, and a hat or visor makes my face feel a lot cooler when it’s sunny. Sometimes I even bring a small hand towel so I can dry off as I go and wipe my face, etc. Avoid cotton if you can, it just gets soaked and heavy!

4.) Adjust your expectations: Don’t get discouraged if you can’t hit your goal pace. The hotter the weather, the slower you will go, so don’t get discouraged. It will just make you that much stronger in the fall! Plus, you don’t want to push too hard and risk passing out or heat exhaustion.

5.) Hydrate: SUPER IMPORTANT! Not just during your workout, but before and after, too. Recovery drinks are important to replenish your body. You will want to replace electrolytes during and after your workouts. Be sure to do a test run with any new products you try in case your stomach is sensitive to them.

Beach Trip 2014 Part 3

Tuesday morning we woke up to gloom and rain, booo! We ate our amazing breakfast again, and Bobby headed off to class. Me, mom and dad just hung out and read books until about 9:00 when the sun came out! We headed to the beach until lunch.

After we ate we went back down to enjoy the afternoon, I was so glad Bobby got to enjoy some sunshine on the beach. He and dad threw the Frisbee a good bit and chilled in the water, while mom and I stayed under our umbrellas.

Action shot! I really did want to get out and play but was worried about my ability to balance, jump, and catch a Frisbee. I’m sure I would have been great entertainment for the other beach goers.

As we were heading back up to the inn for happy hour and dinner, we saw this set up:

Apparently, through the restaurant at the inn, you can pay to set up a private dinner on the beach. Super romantic and fun, but not sure I would like all the people walking up and down the beach catching crabs and running around my table. But, good idea in theory!

We ended up walking down the street to a restaurant Bobby and I had tried last year called Camille’s. Bobby got sushi and was a happy boy!

The boys went to look for crabs when we got back while mom and I stayed on the deck watching the water. I was really starting to not feel great and feel all the bad food, walking around, and general tiredness of a trip when you are pregnant. I however was sad it was our last night, 3 nights is just so short for a vacation!

The next morning we had breakfast, Bobby headed to class, and we checked out of the inn before heading to the outlet mall and picking up Bobby at lunch. What a whirlwind! SO glad we went, but hopefully next year can go for longer.

Beach Trip 2014 Part 2

Happy 4th of July everyone! Have a great and safe holiday weekend.

The first full day we were at the beach, I was SO looking forward to breakfast. I am not normally someone who gets excited about breakfast, but yall, this one is amazing. Cooked to order omelets, mini Belgian waffles, apple wood bacon, hash browns, grits, sausage, yogurt, cereal, pastries, and the most sweet, juicy fruit you have ever seen.

After sufficiently gorging ourselves, Bobby had to leave for class so I went down to the beach with my mom and dad. I picked out a novel from the shelf at the inn to read, and we settled in for over three glorious hours of sunshine and relaxation.

It got darker and darker by the minute, and since Bobby was due to be done with class soon, we headed up to the inn, and we did at the perfect time! The wind picked up like crazy and beach umbrellas were flying in the air.

Sadly it rained all afternoon so Bobby didn’t get to hang out at the beach that day, but we still had a good day. We went to dinner at a place called Captain Daves, and closed out the evening with a walk on the beach.

We hunted for the little sand crabs, and found a handful of them before letting them go and calling it a night. Doing nothing all day really wore me out!

We had one more full day at the beach and I really hoped it would be a sunshine filled day so Bobby could enjoy some beach time!

ASICS GEL-Electro33 Review

I was contacted my ASICS recently to try out their new GEL-Electro33 shoes. Since my feet are way swollen and I can barely fit into any of my other running shoes comfortably, I thought it was a great opportunity to give it a shot since ASICS shoes typically have more room for my foot in the forefoot/toebox area anyway.

The first thing I noticed about these shoes were the three fun colors you can choose from. Of course, there are more important things when choosing a running shoe than colors, but it didn’t hurt that I was drawn to these so much! The purple and yellow immediately reminded me of LSU colors (go Tigers!) so I knew I had to get them.

My thoughts:

This shoe is definitely lighter than the ASICS I am used to wearing, but it still offers stability and support that I need as a pronator. It did take me a couple of runs to figure out how to best tie the laces to fit my specific foot (at first they were too loose and my heel slipped causing rubbing, but I figured it out and also changed my socks).

I always shy away from more minimal shoes because I need arch and forefoot support, but this shoe gave me that without being clunky, which is a huge plus! I felt light on my feet in them without sacrificing comfort. If you are a pronator who likes support but are nervous about trying a more natural feeling shoe, I think this option is a great “stepping stone” to see how you transition into a lighter shoe. I recommend it!
