5 Things I Have Learned About Lifting Weights

I have been talking up boot camp for awhile now, and it’s because I have seen changes in my body like I never saw when I was just running. I always assumed I was “in shape” because I could run a marathon, but y’all, I really wasn’t in overall good health/shape. lifting weights has helped me in so many ways though!

lifting weights

I have urged, begged, and pleaded with you in the past to start strength training if you are mainly just doing cardio, and yup, I’m going to do it again. I would love to make a believer out of you! Here are five things I have learned since I started lifting.

1.) You burn calories for longer: When you lift weights, you have the potential to burn calories for HOURS after, even while you sit on your couch. Your muscles have to repair themselves, so yup, better calorie burn for you, without the extra work! I don’t know about you, but I much prefer burning calories in my PJ’s on the couch than actually having to stay at the gym for an extra hour.

2.) You will look better: Let’s face it. Someone who looks strong looks healthy. My posture is better, my arms look better in a tank top, and I have gotten rid of a lot of excess jiggly flab all over my body. I feel way more toned and tight than I ever did just running. I love it!

3.) You will run faster: Lifting has made my legs way stronger, so I am able to run faster than before with less running workouts. I have the strength to hold my body in proper running form longer, too. I was so surprised to PR in my 5K last month because I only run once a week right now!

4.) You probably won’t bulk up: I say probably because you can bulk up, but it is highly unlikely it will happen unless you are trying to. I go to boot camp and lift four days a week and while I am more toned, I do not feel bulky. Don’t let this common misconception stop you!

5.) You will feel more confident: Looking better, feeling better, and being able to do more with my body has given me such a sense of accomplishment. I am not as afraid to try new things, and I am so thankful that for all that my body does for me every day. It’s just this overall sense of wellness that is kind of addicting. Join me?

As always, please check with your doctor before starting an exercise routine. You will probably be really sore at first but don’t give up! Sore is good. Live for the sore! Let’s all be healthy and fit this summer.

QOTD: Do you lift weights? How does it make you feel? Has it helped you in other areas like running or another sport?

Mother’s Day Weekend

Happy Monday! The weekend went by so fast, but it was SUCH a great one, I wish I could do it all over again. I want to tell you all about it, and I hope you had a good one too (especially all you moms out there!)

Friday did not start out very good for us though. Unfortunately, Emma Kate was up all Thursday night with a bad cough. I tried holding her upright in the rocking chair, giving her water, etc. and nothing worked, so no one in our house got much sleep. Even though she was acting like her crazy self and didn’t have a fever, I decided to call the doctor because, just my luck she would get worse on Saturday. They were able to fit her in Friday morning so I missed boot camp, but it was worth it to make sure Ek was ok.

Checking out the doctor’s chair during her appointment.

Thankfully her ears and lungs were clear, but she had a significant amount of drainage so we were given some meds to help her out. I decided to take her to the park after since she was so good at her appointment. It was a gorgeous day, and lucky for us this weather would continue all weekend.

Friday afternoon was spent cleaning up the house because we had some friends coming over for dinner to BBQ with us. Also, sometime during the afternoon, I got a text from my mm asking if they could stay for the weekend. They had gone up to the Biltmore for a few days, and didn’t feel like driving all the way back to New Orleans in one day, so they ended up arriving late that evening after our dinner guests had left.

On Saturday morning, mom and dad watched little bit so Bobby could go to the gym and I went on a five mile run.

We took my parents out to Livingston for lunch, they had never been out there and I told them then needed to come back during the week so we could take them to the Farmer’s Market. We walked around the shops after lunch and then headed to the house so Emma Kate could nap.

Bobby had to be up at the yogurt shop for a birthday party, so my dad and I drove around looking at open houses while my mom hung out at the house relaxing while EK napped. My dad and I share a love for looking at beautiful homes, so we randomly drove around to different neighborhoods an found about 12 houses to go into (our area has TONS of new construction so they were easy to find!) Check out this gorgeous house on the water. I loved the kitchen.

It had a huge screened porch and a deck. Heaven.

We went back to the house after the baby woke up and then the four of us piled in my SUV and we took my mom back to our two favorite houses to show her (one being the one in the above pics, of course.)

Then we surprised Bobby at the yogurt shop and grabbed a snack there before heading back home. The weather was so beautiful we were able to sit on our screened in porch and drink some wine while we waited for Bobby to come home so we could eat dinner. Then we just relaxed and watched TV that evening. It was the best relaxing day!

Sunday morning we hung out and got ready for church, and when the three of us went to leave, my mom and dad headed back to Louisiana. It was so great to see them, especially for Mother’s Day. We took the opportunity to get some family photos before they left which was fun.

After church we came home and I worked on my laptop on the back porch. Trying to soak up this low humidity while I can! Bobby’s sister babysat for us last night so we could go out to dinner for Mother’s Day. We went to eat at my favorite Mexican restaurant and then grocery shopping (very exciting).

Looking at the flower section made me laugh, totally wiped out for Mother’s Day!

On or way out of the grocery store in the parking lot, Bobby was goofing off with our cart (we had one of those short half carts) and he hit a hole and the cart flipped over forward and the momentum threw Bobby over top of the cart. Groceries EVERYWHERE, and I was dying laughing. A man jumped out of his car and came over to help us and I just couldn’t stop laughing. Poor Bobby. He hurt his shin, and his pride. We are tempted to contact Kroger for the surveillance footage just so we can watch. Sadly some of our eggs busted during the whole ordeal!

Such fun memories from this weekend, can’t wait to do it again!

QOTD: What did you do for Mother’s Day?

5 Things Friday XV

Friday, we meet again! I hope everyone had a great week, and has an even better weekend.

1.) Mother’s Day: Mother’s Day is SUNDAY. Hopefully you were already aware of this fact and have plans to mail a card/send a gift/visit your mother. Do something. Your mom put up with you your entire life, including your angsty teen years, so tell her thank you.

2.) Beat the sun: ASICS is once again trying to beat the sun with a fun race, and this year they are including some amateur runners, and you can vote for your favorite! (ppstt. Ryan is a fellow ASICS ambassador, just saying.)

3.) Fabletics fun: Check out these adorable new pants and top I got from Fabletics this month. I love the top because it’s super light and nice and long for a tall person like me. The pants have tiny little cut outs in the pattern and I love the bright color. Very comfy!

Also, how fun is my RunningSkirts.com skirt?

4.) Complete cookie: I know I am late to the party, but I just had my first Complete cookie recently and yall, eating protein has never been this tasty for me! I am hooked. I have only tried chocolate chip and birthday cake but they are both delicious! I usually eat half a cookie then save the other half for the next day.

5.) Email list: Another huge thank you to those that have signed up for my email list via my free printables or my free how to start a blog e-course. If you want to join my email list (I only email bi-weekly right now) without signing up for one of the above two options, you can do so below. Thanks so much for your support. Lots of good things coming, and subscribers will be the first to know!

QOTD: Have you ever had a Complete cookie? What are you doing for Mother’s Day?

Don’t Be Like That

Eagle Creek so graciously sent some packing essentials my way, which I was very grateful for. I have always packed for races with garbage and grocery bags, so this was a real treat! Check out my short video below for more info and a fun little way of sharing about their products.

Here is the Eagle Creek website where you can find all of their cool gear! Remember, no one wants to sit next to a smelly person’s stuff on an airplane. So just don’t be like that, ok?

QOTD: How do you pack your stinky race day gear and shoes?

Time Marches On

On Sunday, our church had it’s senior recognition during the service Bobby and I attend. They did a great job (they had a video play while each student brought a rose to their parents), and our pastor preached a great sermon geared towards the high school seniors. I was admittedly a little distracted by a couple of things that I kept thinking about during the service that I thought would be appropriate to share here.

IMG_4798 (2)

The first thing I kept feeling was a little bit of regret. I remember the spring of my graduation from high school clear as if it were yesterday. It was such an exciting season for me. We had the senior trip, graduation, I had a graduation party, then a fun summer working and hanging out with friends. This was to be fllowed by shopping for my dorm room, college orientation, and then finally moving away to college. So much going on, so much to look forward to, with my whole life ahead of me.

But, there is something else that I remember during that time as well, and it was that all I wanted was for time to speed up. Hurry up, let’s go, I have things to do! I wanted to hurry through graduation to get to summer, then hurry through summer to get to college. Once I was in college, I wanted to hurry through that to be a “grown up” and be “on my own”, you know, adulting and all that.

Oh, how I wish I could go back to 17 year old me and tell myself to SLOW DOWN. That this was such a fun time of life that I would never be able to get back, and that I would wish so hard that I could get back to it when I was older. Not that I dislike my life now, but let’s be real, the end of high school/going to college is a fun, carefree time for most. I watched as each of those seniors brought a rose to their families, most of the moms were crying, and the students were grinning from ear to ear. I knew EXACTLY the excitement they were feeling in that moment, and I felt the urge to reach out, grab their shoulders, and tell them to slow down.

College will come and go so quickly, and then you are left adulting for the rest of your life, and yall, it’s hard. The decisions, the responsibilities, I  know we all feel the pressure. Some days I wish I could get a college “redo” and really soak it in instead of hurry through it. I want them to all savor the moment and really make the most of it. I envy them all, having a chance to start from the beginning.

The second thing I kept thinking about that was bringing me to tears over and over again was the thought that this will be me in 17 short years. I will be the mom, crying uncontrollably, accepting a rose from my grown up daughter as she smiles excitedly, ready for her future.

Yall, I am so, so guilty of wishing time away. On rainy days when I am stuck inside with a hyper toddler, on days when I have a ton of work to do, and on days when my house is a mess, I just want to get through it and on to the next day. But I know if I keep wishing these days away, then I will blink, and Emma Kate will be on the senior video in front of the church. Baby dedication is in two weeks, and it was exactly this time last year we dedicated our little girl. A year. A whole year has passed. I only have 17 more and she will be gone.

It really is true that the days are long, but the years are short. I pray that in these hard seasons of being a mom, that I will not forget to embrace each moment, and that I will not wish them away for something easier. Time marches on, whether we are ready for it or not. We have a choice, if we will make each day count, or long for something else, something different, something further down the road.

I pray for those high school seniors, for my baby girl, and for myself, that we would hold on for just a moment longer, stop and take it all in for another second, and be content in the place we are, for this season. For it will be gone all too soon, and we can’t get it back.

May 2016 Goals

Why hello May, when did you get here? I saw Justin Timberlake meme’s all weekend, so…tis the season I guess! I’m super excited about May now that I have my fitness tracking and goal setting printables to give me a tangible reminder of my goals. (You can get yours HERE or clicking the button below).

Free fitness and goal tracking printables

Anyway, before we dive into my May goals, let’s take a peek at how I did in April.

1.) Continue PT exercises: C- The first half of the month I didn’t do any, and then my hip started acting up (go figure) so I started them again.

2.) Read one book: B+ I am about 3/4 of the way through a book, so I am giving myself some credit here!

cookies

3.) Give away or sell items: B+ I gave a few clothing items and DVD’s to my mom, but didn’t do any selling like I wanted to.

4.) Keep a running base of 6 miles: C- I ran four miles once and several 3 milers, but I’m determined to do 6 next weekend!

Looking back on these, I see see exactly why I failed on some of them. I had yet to print out my printables because I wanted to wait to start a new month fresh, and I totally see how if I would have taken a few action steps to ensure I met my goals, it would have been way more likely to happen. My pages are now printed, and I am filling them out today so that I can have success this month!

————————————–

May goals:

1.) Sell items in the garage: We have a neighborhood garage sale next weekend, I may participate. if not, I’m either giving away or selling what’s left in the garage.

2.) Clean up my closet: Now that it’s officially pretty much summer here, I need to take my sweaters and relocate them to give myself more room, as well as get rid of things I don’t wear anymore.

3.) Boot camp 4 times a week: I got a little off track the past couple of weeks with classes (Missed one this past week and two the week before), so I am ready to get back in the swing of things with a more set schedule.

day in life1

4.) Keep a running base of 6 miles: Putting this one back on there again. Determined to get my six miles in! It’s getting hot out and I know my pace will be slower, but I want to keep a decent base for when fall comes back around.
