Stay Fit at the Computer

Hi everyone I’m Renee’ Benda I blog over at http://Bendifulblog.com. I am very excited to guest blog for Heather! I’ve enjoyed reading about her running & travel adventures for some time now and jumped at the chance to guest blog. I’m a 30 year old mother of two working hard to stay fit and healthy while balancing a my family, life and fitness. I hope you share with you some great recipes, workouts, and fun finds from across the interwebs.

We’ve all been there whether you’re in cubicle farm or a freelance writer, we find ourselves sitting in front of a computer for hours a day! This has become normal for many career tracks and often wreaks havoc on our healthy- living goals. There are some simple steps you can take to staying fit while at the computer.

The obviously solutions would be a walking work station, but who has $300 for one of those? Plus not all employers are yet on board with alternative solutions to the ole’ desk, chair computer set up. Save yourself $300 and try these easy and inexpensive options.

Posture Check! Sitting for hours in s slouched position can be destructive for back and your heath! I like to set posture check reminders in my outlook calendar, you can set them on your phone too! A simple quick reminder to check your posture. This will remind you to sit up straight and push back your shoulders. This simple instruction will help you engage your core. Feeling extra ambitious add in some tummy pulses.

Pack your lunch and your sneakers. How close is the nearest park to your office? If you can’t answer this question it’s time to find out. During your lunch break get out and explore. Pack your lunch and your sneakers. Taking a walk around the closest park or even just taking a stroll around the block gets your heart pumping, feeds your brain fresh air, and can help burn a few extra calories. Chances are good that by packing your lunch you will make healthier choices than the vending machine. You will have more time to walk at lunch when you aren’t waiting in line at the fast food place. Getting fit is about making a healthy decision and then making another.
Standing during conference calls. Conference calls can be long and boring, we can all admit that right? Take a break from your chair and stand up during the call. It’s a simple solution and also a healthy one. You burn more calories standing than you do sitting. If you’re comfortable standing mix it up! You can bring in a 5 pound weight and do curls while standing and listening.

Play Ball! Have a fur baby or a real baby? Then you probably have a small ball kicking around your house. Bring it to the office, place it under your feet. Trying to balance the ball under your feet helps engage your core and work on stability. This is also a great solution for those of us who are not allowed to sit on a stability ball as a chair. The best part about this exercise is most of the time you can do it without anyone noticing!
HYDRATE. The office atmosphere can lend itself to overeating. It’s Sally’s Birthday, a client dropped off cupcakes, you know the drill. You can offset the amount you eat by hydrating. Drinking water is a proven step in staying healthy and active. I have a friend who packs two water bottles each day full of ice cold water. Throughout the day before 5pm her goal is to drink them both. The water helps her stay full and keeps her hydrated for her after work workout. If you’re full you will eat less of the snacks around the office.

Making these 5 simple adjustments to your work day can help you stay fit while in front of your computer. You will still need to schedule regular sweat sessions but these small steps can help you make healthier choices during the day.

Weekly Recap: October Week 5

 

Good morning! We are headed down to Orlando today, and had fun spectating at ironman Florida yesterday. My sister survived and did very well, and now we are headed to Disney, because Bobby and I have a race to run next weekend!

Let’s take a look at my workouts from this last week. If you will remember, the weekend before (Saturday) I ran the Jazz half marathon, so I took the week pretty easy and didn’t run until Thursday trying to let my arch heal.

Sunday: rest (day after half marathon)

Monday lift upper body weights, 30 minutes stationary bike

Tuesday: lift weights, upper body, 30 minutes stationary bike

Wednesday: off (was wearing holter monitor)

Thursday: upper body weights, 4.5 mile treadmill run

Friday: rest/travel

Saturday: ironman spectating (walked about 2.5 miles total, some in the sand, ran about .5 miles trying to catch my sister to take pictures.

This week will be interesting, and won’t be a typical pre half marathon race week. We will be in Florida all week, walking around a lot and eating sodium filled restaurant food. Oh well. What can you do. It will be a really fun race, we just won’t be getting very many miles in (except walking) or eating healthy foods. Today we check in and head to EPCOT for the Food and Wine Festival before running wine and dine!

Hey friends! Guess what? I am in Panama City Beach, FL for Ironman Florida! My sister is racing this morning, and so we are here to cheer her on. It’s been a wild ride so far, first we couldn’t find the condo, then we found it and were very unhappy with the condition of the room we were first put in and they moved us into a much nicer/better one….and then the air conditioner didn’t work! So we went to dinner while the repair guy came, and when we got back we found out the news that….it really is broken and we had to move rooms…again!!! So we JUST got settled into room number three, at 9:00 last night, and then are up early this morning for the start of the race!

1.) How/Why did you start blogging?

I starting reading other blogs and realized how much I loved hearing about how others train, struggle, succeed, etc.  I wanted to share my thoughts and adventures!  I also wanted to be able to meet and network with others through online groups (Fitfluential, Sweatpink)

2.) Sum up your blog in a couple sentences:

Mile Twenty Eight is where I share stories about my training, racing, and any adventures in between.  I also really enjoy trying new products and sharing my thoughts/opinions on them with others.

3.)What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?

I want to reach all types of people all over the world.  I hope to inspire them to keep training and stay fit.  I want to be that “down to earth” person that that has real struggles and success stories to share with everyone.  I hope to offer good advice, product reviews, and entertainment.  I also hope to meet many more people and learn new ways improve areas in my life as well.

4.)What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?

I would have to say that training and completing my first marathon felt like one of my biggest healthy living accomplishments.  I spent a lot of time pushing myself further than I had ever run before.  I also focused on maintaining a healthy diet to supplement the hard training.  Everything was worth it in the end.  I was a marathoner!

November Goals 2012

 

As I said the other day, it seems like October flew by! Which means, it’s time to look at my October goals and see how I did. Below are my October goals:

1.) PR in a half marathon. Grade: C+. Wwweeeeellll we all know what happened with that. First was the gulf coast half and then jazz. If you missed those recaps go check it out and see what happened. #fail But I came close. And I PR’ed through 9.5 miles. Smile

2.) Actually make a craft from Pinterest. Grade A+ Done! Check this out! So excited.

3.) Read a book. Grade: A+ Done! When we went on the cruise I read an entire book, it was nice and relaxing!

4.) Vlog more. Grade: F. Hm. I didn’t vlog a single time in October. Major #fail.  Let’s try this one again.

Ok so moving on to November. Obviously, we know one….

1.) Vlog More: Let’s shoot low this time, I want to vlog at least ONE TIME in November. There.

2.) Be happy: There are some crazy things going on in my life right now that have caused me some discouragement, and I am working on being happy despite my circumstances.

3.) Secret goal. Yup. Pulling this one again. Trust me when I say I want to tell you guys SO BADLY. So let’s pray this one happens in November.

4.) Get at least half my Christmas shopping done. No waiting until the last minute. Let’s get it done before the crazies come out with their less than stellar Christmas spirit!

Gah. Are we really talking about Christmas?!? Ok, moving on. I wanted to share a couple of Hallowen pictures with you all. Bobby and I had a low key evening carving a pumpkin, watching Hocus Pocus, and handing out candy. Works for me.

Happy Halloween, and Costume Look Back

October could possibly go on record for being the quickest month ever, even through it is 31 days long. I feel like I blinked my eyes, and today is Halloween! I don’t think I am as “in tune” with this kind of ting anymore. When I was in school or was teaching I was very aware of holidays, parties, etc….but not having kids and working from home….not so much. Either way, we will hand out candy, we will watch Hocus Pocus (MY FAVORITE!), carve a pumpkin, and light my fall candles.

I have never been a huge Halloween costume fan. I rarely went to parties growing up, and never have I once donned a…err…”revealing” Halloween costume (no offense to those who do, just never interested me, nor did I want to spend money on a costume.) We always just wore things we had around the house. Totally boring right? I think I have been a football player 3 times.

Last year, we went to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party with some friends, and since she was very pregnant at the time and needed a wheelchair, we decided to go as Dr.’s/nurses bringing her into labor and delivery. So much fun!

Creative no? We just can’t help it. By the way, how totally young does Bobby look in the 2007 photo? My, my, how we have aged in five years. I totally envy people who come up with cool and creative costumes every year, but it is just not my gift. Maybe one day I will be that awesome mom who makes her kids Halloween costumes. We can dream, right?

Blogging Made Easier

 

Blogging takes up a LOT of time. First there is the blogging itself, research, picture taking, then there is social media presence, answering e-mails, etc. I absolutely love all the things that blogging brings, but if my computer or internet and phone speed are not working with me, it can make all encompassing “blogging” very very frustrating.

As many of you know, I am a Verizon Wireless ambassador and have been testing out the Samsung Galaxy S3 for the past couple of months. I have talked about how awesome the device itself is, and all it’s cool features, but I haven’t yet shared with you about the 4G LTE service itself.

First of all, this service as expected is FAST! One of my biggest time sucks used to be trying to look at something on my phone and having to wait forever for a page to load, going outside on the porch holding my phone up trying to get more bars (oh come on you KNOW you have done it!) and then getting frustrated when a page times out or a call drops. I can honestly say I have been spoiled by just how fast this service is. There is no way my old service can “keep up” with this one.

As I have mentioned before my favorite thing is the mobile hotspot. One would expect a mobile hotspot to “work” but be very slow. Well I can tell you my friends, this is not the case. As a daily blogger, I obviously need to be on my computer a lot to get posts written, but sometimes I am just not home long enough to get this done, and am on the go a lot. The mobile hotspot and the speed of the 4gLTE service has made my new favorite, blogging in the car, possible. (Obviously not while I am driving!)

We go back and forth from Mississippi to Louisiana a lot, and I do a lot of traveling with work. Instead of letting this time be unproductive and a waste, I let my husband drive, and crank out a blog post while we are getting from point A to point B. I used to have to type it out and wait until I got somewhere to upload photos, or publish, but not anymore, and it’s awesome!

So, especially for you my blogger friends, you should seriously look into this as a necessity to your job of being a blogger/social media lover and be more efficient with your time with 4G LTE!

Becka at 50 half marathons in 50 states inspired me to start blogging. I thought it would be a fun way to be creative plus keep me accountable Also it was a fun way to share with my family and friends my running obsession (fun for me anyway).

Just Plodding Along is where I share my quest to complete 30 half marathons before turning 30, 17 down and 1 year until I turn 30. Races, running gear, and life overshares can all be found on my blog.

3.) What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?

I hope to share my story and inspire others but also be inspired by other runners.

4.) What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?

I would stay sticking with my goal of 30 before 30 but also losing about 30lbs and finding confidence in myself and my abilities.

I love motivational quotes, often times called “fitspiration” when in the realm of health and fitness. They help me on hard days, when I am not feeling very confident, or when I don’t feel like working towards my goals at all. This one in particular is something that has really helped motivate me in tough times:

Not going to lie, there have been times when I have felt like quitting. Between injury and illness setbacks, battling the weather, etc. sometimes it feels easier to throw my hands up and say “forget it, I can’t do this anymore.” Sometimes it takes a few minutes, and sometimes it takes a few days, but I always come back around with some thinking and a lot of praying.

Think about why you started.

I started because I want to live a healthy long life to see my family grow and change

I started because I never thought I could accomplish my goals

I started because it seemed impossible

I started because I am a fighter.

So next time you say it’s too hard, or I can’t do it, or I will never be good enough, remember to think about why you started in the first place, and let it be the motivation that helps you reach your goals.

WOW I can’t believe this is the 40th blogger I have done a spotlight on, madness! I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend. I board the Disney magic today for a week of fun in the sun. I started a blog when my family relocated to Maine almost 7 years ago at the urging of a friend as an efficient, convenient way to share pictures and stories of our life here in Maine with those we no longer had the pleasure of being with every day.

Then I met Amy and Jen and we started Mainely Running with a goal of motivating others to get moving ~ at their pace and on their own terms. With Mainely Running we hope to inspire others. We always say ~ If we can do it. You can do it!

2.) Sum up your blog in a couple sentences:

Mainely Running’s goal is to motivate and inspire others to get moving.We offer a running class through our local YMCA to help folks get started and to keep them moving toward their goals.


3.)What do you wish to accomplish/achieve by blogging?

We hope to encourage others to set fitness related goals and to work toward those goals with support from us and from our Mainely Running community one step at a time.

 

4.)What is your biggest healthy living accomplishment?

Amy, Jen and I found ourselves looking for new outlets and new challenges after putting our careers on hold or leaving our careers completely in order to be home with our children. The challenges inherent in becoming stay at home moms brought us together initially. The challenge of running a mile, a 5K, a half-marathon and then a marathon kept us together and drew us closer then we could have ever predicted.

I think the three of us would agree that our biggest healthy living accomplishment has been finding balance in our lives and realizing that taking care of ourselves makes us better, stronger, healthier and happier mothers and wives!

QOTD: Do you run by yourself or with running friends?

October 2012 Goals

 

I wrote a post in September talking about my goals for the month. Now that it’s October (WOW) it’s time to look back and see how I did. I decided to only set 3 goals for September, I have been really busy so I wanted to set some “mini” obtainable in a month goals as opposed to more long term ones. To review, here are the three goals I made:

1.) Run 4 days a week

2.) Drink 8 glasses of water a day

3.) Stop negative thinking/pessimistic attitude

aaannnddd here is how I did:

1.) Run 4 days a week (A-) I did this all but one week, where I ran three times. I am happy to say I finally feel like I am starting to get back on track with my workouts. Let’s hope this trend continues and I stay injury free!

2.) Drink 8 glasses of water a day (A+) It has been very hot and humid, so this goal was pretty simple to follow. I think I drank nearly 8 glasses just during and after my runs! I only had a glass of sweet tea at dinner on Friday or Saturday nights, and other than that and sports drinks, it has been water all the way, and not going to lie my face has cleared up a LOT. I have always been that girl that struggles with acne her whole growing up, but between not wearing makeup every day and drinking lots of water, it’s looking pretty good!

3.) Stop negative thinking/pessimistic attitude (B-) Not going to lie, this is still tough for me. It kind of comes and goes in waves. I will do really well for a few days, and be really positive, then something will happen and send me into a temporary tail spin. I am really going to keep working on not letting little things set me off and ruin my day or week, and instead try to learn from the situations and use them as an opportunity for growth.

October Goals:

1.) PR in a half marathon. I have two halfs this month, the first I doubt I will PR in, but the 2nd, I think it’s possible if I continue to work hard to get back to where I was. Reason why I won’t PR in the first one…ok, I guess it’s time to spill the beans. I am going on a cruise right before the half marathon, so Bobby may have to roll be through the course. I am of course VERY excited about my trip (got a great deal!) but the half…oy.

2.) Actually make a craft from Pinterest. I always see and pin the cutest things (especially for the holidays!) but never actually make anything. I am so not crafty, it’s kind of sad. Must remedy this.

3.) Read a book. October is pretty crazy with travel, but reading a book relaxes me, and it also means I am taking time for myself, so this is a good goal for this wild month.

4.) Vlog more.  I vlog here and there, but I want to do it a bit more consistently, at least once a week. I think that’s a good starting point.
