Scenes from the Weekend: March 2014

We had an absolutely beautiful weekend here in the south. Temps in the upper 60’s/low 70’s and mostly sunny. It truly is amazing how much my mood lifts when the weather is nice!

I took advantage Saturday and went for a 3 mile run. It felt so good to be running outside in a tank top in the sunshine, I think I smiled most of the way.

We were also able to get some work done outside. I bleached the back patio and front sidewalk, and Bobby did some weed pulling and bush trimming in the back yard. It’s not all done yet, but looking so much better!

Bella gets mad when she can’t see over the fence and we are looking over.

We also took the dogs on nice long walks, toured the new St. Jude Dream Home in our neighborhood, and just sat outside chatting. Sunday evening we BBQ’ed in the back yard, enjoying the extra hour of daylight.

It was a great weekend, and I can’t wait for more sunny, warm day!

Disney Fit Challenge

A NEW sporting event is coming to the ESPN Wide World of Sports this September! Disney will be hosting a Crossfit-style “Fit Challenge” for elite, intermediate, and recreational athletes. The event will be held September 26-28, and will be an indoor and outdoor event at the complex.

Check out part of the press release I was sent:

“Disney Fit Challenge will be a three-day event (Sept 26-28) involving athletes competing in different fitness challenges that test a participant’s speed, strength, skill, endurance, balance and power.  Challenges are designed based on age and skill level with more experienced athletes competing in movements such as muscle-ups and double-unders while recreational participants compete in movements that may include box jumps, kettle bell swings, push-ups, squats and broad jumps. Competitors with the highest scores in their division and age group from the first two days advance to the final day of competition.

A Health & Fitness Expo will feature the latest fitness merchandise, products and apparel during the competition….

Disney Sports is collaborating with I AM CrossFit, one of the leading competitive fitness organizations in the Southeast, on the staging of Disney Fit Challenge. The event is the first of its kind held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which hosts more than 350 sports events each year, and builds on the complex’s wide variety of athletic events geared towards athletes of all ages and abilities.”

Registration for this event opens soon, March 18, so if you want to participate I wouldn’t wait to register. Daily admission for spectators is $16.50 for adults and $11.50 for children and can be purchased at the sports complex box office. Be sure to follow @DisneySports on Twitter for more information.

QOTD: Are you glad Disney is going to have this style of competition? Would this be something you would like to register for?

A Year Through the Looking Glass

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been a year since I officially changed my blog name from Running With Sass. It was a huge leap of faith for me, and I was really nervous how everyone would react. Thankfully, you were all very supportive, and it was such a great move for me.

Runlogo

I had realized after three years of blogging that there was so much more to me than just running, and so much I wanted to share. I no longer wanted to be pigeon holed, I wanted to feel free to write about whatever I chose. Of course, there is still a very heavy emphasis on running, but it’s nice to know I have the option when the mood strikes me.

I have been given many opportunities this year, and am so thankful for my readers, sponsors, friends, and family. I had no idea what the future would hold for my blog when I made the change, but it has all been so very positive, I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!

The idea of Through Heather’s Looking Glass, is seeing life the way I see it, from my perspective. Everyone may not always agree with it, think it’s interesting, or even care, and that’s ok! It’s my life, and I am blessed to be doing what I do every day. So thank YOU for sticking with me through thick and thin, from Running with Sass to now, and hopefully for many more years to come!

QOTD: Were you reading my blog back when I was RWS?

Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend

I am sure many of you have already seen the announcement, but just in case you haven’t, yesterday runDisney announced the Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend in Disneyland! The race weekend will take place November 14-16 2014, (the weekend after Wine and Dine in Walt Disney World) and will include Kids races, a 5k, and a half marathon as well as a pasta in the park party and health and fitness expo.

(Video used with permission from runDisney)

I think it’s expected that they would come up with a more “male oriented” race to balance out Tinkerbell and Princess half marathon weekends, and I know a lot of people are now hoping for a similar race on the east coast. It is also worth noting that the course for this race will be NEW and will not follow the same path as Disneyland half marathon weekend or the Tinkerbell half marathon.

Tom Wolber, senior vice president of Disney sports enterprises and Downtown Disney had this to say about the new event: “Our runDisney events continue to be hugely popular and by joining forces with the Avengers brand, we expect this race will appeal to an even broader range of runners in Southern California whom we hope will see this event as the perfect opportunity to unleash their inner Super Hero in a race to a personal triumph.”

This race WILL be eligible for the Coast to Coast race challenge, and registration for this race weekend begins March 25th at noon ET.  Be sure to check our runDisney.com for more information and to stay up to date! Also, you can follow runDisney on Twitter and Facebook. (You may also want to follow the #SmashTheHalf hashtag on Twitter!)

QOTD: What are your thoughts on this new race? Will you be running?

Back to My Routine

Finally home! Until last night, I had only slept in my bed once since January 6th. Even thought I didn’t get back to New Orleans until 6:15, I decided to drive home last night anyway. So my trip home started yesterday at 8:00 am, and ended at 8:00 pm. California is fun but man is it far away!

1535503_559150137495786_210444141_n

Anyway, this sounds quote ridiculous I assure you, but I somehow managed to pull my back out at the airport. Yes, the same side I hurt around New Years. When we got off the bus at LAX, the man put my what I found out later would be 54 pound suitcase on the ground. Well, I had to get it up an dover the curb so I pulled it really hard…and…well, you get the idea. It was so painful I almost didn’t make it through security I kid you not. My mom had to help me take my shoes off, etc. because I couldn’t bend down. I don’t know what I would have done if I was flying alone. Pathetic, I know.

So I am officially now the old lady, sleeping wasn’t too fun last night because every time I tired to roll over I was reminded of the fact that I did NOT lift with my legs. Today calls for ice and ibuprofen, as well as a LOT of work.

That was a long into, but I digress. Point being, I am HOME and will be getting back into a routine, oh, how I love routine. I have six, yes SIX races to recap as well as lots of other fun parts of my travels, and, look for an amazing Under Armour giveaway! It’s going to be a great couple of weeks around here folks, and I am so glad to be home and back to my blog.

QOTD: Have you ever had an airport mishap?

What would you try if you knew you wouldn’t fail?

This guest post is written by Lesley. I return home tomorrow and have so much to share!

Sometimes it can be easy to set goals that are relatively easy to achieve. Conventional wisdom tells us to avoid setting goals that are too lofty, to not set ourselves up for disappointment and failure.

Our family disagrees. We enjoy setting goals that are ambitious and daring.

Almost all of us have heard a quote similar to the one above, I’m sure. Recently, I really took a good look at this quote and thought of how it applied to me. It inspired me to find a word to live by in 2014: Fearless

mud run (2)

My goal is to live this year as if I know I’ll never fail, even if I end up doing that very thing. This will require me to try new things and to set my running and fitness goals very high.

I’m also positive that I’m going to have people doubt me. But, the way I see it is simple. If people don’t think I’m “crazy” for my goals then I didn’t set them high enough.

medal (2)

I was intimidated to participate in a mud run and I surprised myself when I finished it. I cried during my first 10K because I was so miserable and it made me so proud of myself when I crossed the finish line.

10k (2)

In closing, don’t make goals that are easy. Nothing of value comes easy – so make your goals mean something.

QOTD: In what areas could you be fearless? What is something you would try if you knew you wouldn’t fail?

runDisney WDW Marathon Weekend Expo 2014

dopey sign

Whew! I am home from Disney World, only to leave again tomorrow for Disneyland to run my first ever Tinkerbell half marathon! Right now I am wondering who came up with this idea, I am still tired from the 48.6 I ran this past weekend for Dopey!

I had a great time at the runDisney expo last weekend, we actually spent over three hours just hanging out, chatting with friends, and soaking up the marathon atmosphere. It was great to see so many of my friends and meet some new ones that I have only spoken to online. I also met some super sweet folks that read my blog, I loved talking to everyone! One of the first people I ran into was Carissa, who was looking fabulous as always.

I headed over to the KT Tape booth to get taped up for the races. You will be happy to hear I got taped Wednesday and it lasted until Sunday morning. The edges had JUST started rolling up so I went ahead and reapplied for the marathon.

I was able to get us all the official merchandise that I wanted that was available. If I am being honest, I felt like there was a lack in Inaugural Dopey merchandise. I was hoping for a Dopey specific mug or glass, and a Dopey hoodie/sweatshirt, none of which I saw available. (Also when will they make dishwasher safe mugs like the rest of Disney World sells? I was hoping this was the year).

I will say I LOVE my pink “I did it” Dopey shirt, they hit the mark with that one. I also was able to get a Dopey sweaty band that is really cute.

We did a little shopping around and visited booths, and we both also snagged a pair of the new runDisney shoes. I got Cinderella and Bobby got Goofy. The kids shoes looked SO tiny and cute!photo 5 (2)

I am also glad they changed the way you stand in line for shoes. I felt it went very smoothly and was an easy process. I hope they continue this at other races.

There were also marathon weekend specific inserts and shoe charms on sale. I thought $40 was a little steep for a pair of inserts and charms. I was considering getting them if they were just the inserts and around $20, but I wasn’t going to spring for inserts 1/3 the price of the actual shoes (which I think are priced very reasonably).

We picked up our race bibs in the next building, where they also had some of the official merchandise.

We didn’t stay for any of the speaker series because we still had not checked into our hotel (and we were very hungry!) But I heard they went well.

runDisney expo

As we headed out there was information about the cool down party, as well as the official hashtags for the race weekend.

I was also very happy with the new women’s cut race shirts, and was pleasantly surprised to see they are the awesome silky material, not the usual rough heavy ones. Now if only they would let us choose between long sleeve and short sleeve I would be one happy girl. I do however love this years design and colors, it’s my favorite year of the four marathon weekends I have participated in. Great job runDisney!

I went to the expo Wednesday and it was not nearly as crowded as I expected it to be which was a nice surprise. I had room to walk down the aisles and didn’t feel rushed to get in and out of a booth that was crowded. The signage was great, the volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable, and I would say it was a great success!

QOTD: What are your thoughts on the new women’s cut shirts? What day did you go to the expo?

Orlando Sentinel Dopey Story

Good morning folks! By the time most of you read this I will be DONE with the half marathon and will only have one day left of racing. Halleluiah!

I normally don’t post on Saturdays anymore, but this is something I just had to share. I was Interviewed for a story for the Orlando Sentinel about running Dopey, then Thursday, I met with a photographer and we shot video and photos in the pouring rain for the paper.

Time to Dream

Good morning! I am here in Disney World and we board the Disney Dream today! It’s very warm here, in the 80′s, which I of course don’t mind for a cruise.

We made it to the hotel about 5:30 last night then took the boat to Downtown Disney to eat at Earl of Sandwich with Jen and Jeff. Bobby and I may have also had some ice cream while we were out.

We took the boat back, watched some football, and now are ready to go! I hope everyone has a great week and enjoys the guest posts I have scheduled. See ya real soon!
