Favorite Race Bling

It’s no secret I love to race. I love the thrill of the start, the adrenaline of the home stretch, and the accomplishment of crossing the finish line. However, I am a girl, and I also really, really love the bling. I have collected a good bit of it in the past 3 years (and really really need a new rack to hang my medals on!)

I display my two medal racks proudly in our bonus room. What’s the point of throwing it in the closet in a box or displaying it somewhere no one ever goes? I love looking up from my desk and seeing them, side by side, my two full rows of accomplishments.

With five new races already on the schedule, a new place to hang medals is a must. Maybe I just need one of those extender bars to go underneath so I can have two rows of medals? Anyway, I am getting off topic here. While I love ALL my medals, a select few hold a special place in my heart. I thought about what I would do if I had to narrow it down to three medals, and this is what i came up with and why.

1.) Disney marathon 2011

This one is pretty obvious to anyone who knows me, I love runDisney and Disney in general. This was my first (and only so far) marathon, and I was so proud to get this baby! I worked my tail off to get there, and it felt so great to cross that finish line. Whenever I look at it and think about that fun day, it puts a smile on my face.

2.) Rouge Orleans Ultra Marathon Relay

This race was so hard. It was the first overnight relay (and only) I had ever done, and I had NO idea what to expect. it was fun, miserable, difficult and awesome all wrapped into one. I slept 1.5 hours during a 36 hour time slot, ran about 21 miles, biked about 10 miles, oh, and the temps overnight were on the teens, or and we were up high on a levee in the crazy wind and cold. I am so proud of this accomplishment, and even though in the middle of it I swore I would never do it again, I find myself saying “I can’t WAIT to do another one of these!”

3.) Rock ‘n Roll New Orleans half marathon 2012

I chose this one because I have run all three RnR NOLA races so it reminds me of three races! I love New Orleans, love that it is my roots, and love this race! Not to mention I am obsessed with Fleur de Lies and well, take a look at this beauty! This year’s race was a fun one for me because my husband ran it with me. (We always run the same races but he always takes off, he’s way faster than me!) We ran every step together and he coached and encouraged me to a PR. I will always remember this one!

**Ok friends, now it’s your turn! e-mail me at runningwithsass@gmail.com. Send me a photo of your favorite race bling, what race it’s from, and tell me (briefly, please) why it is your favorite. If you have a blog put the URL in there as well, and once day next week I will write a post and share all of your photos and stories! Please send photos by this Saturday morning the 7th, 10:00 am CST to make it into the post. If you miss out I may do part 2 at a later date, maybe this fall when you can collect more race bling!

*You can check out race recaps from these races and more by clicking on my races tab above!

QOTD: How do you display your race medals? On the wall? In the attic? Hanging on your mirror in your bedroom like my mom’s are? (haha she may kill me for that one)

  1. Fun! You really have me thinking about my 2nd favorite now because obviously my 2009 Mickey medal is my fave. Do trophies count? I have a pretty cool bobble head one from a half!

I can’t wait til we get our Goofy medal! Aaaah!

  2. Love this post! I’m glad you’re proud of your race bling; afterall, the medals aren’t only pretty but also representative of lots and lots of hard work!! If you look closely I’m sure you can see some blood, sweat and tears on each medal. Unfortunately my medals are stuffed in my closet. Guess I need to work on that… If you do Rogue Orleans next year (and need another person) let me know; I’m dying to do an ultra relay!

  3. I love that and how every medal has a story behind it :). I just sent mine in but it is a trophy, still it’s pretty special because of the story behind it. All your medals are really cool looking too, a lot of mine are from local 5Ks because that’s about all I can win an AG medal for, and are kinda plain. They’re not hanging yet either, since we just moved :(.

Good luck with training for your next Disney and Rock and Roll races, I want to do one of those so bad one day.

  4. My favorite race bling is the medal I got at the end of the Lowell 1st Run this year – it’s a bottle stopper in the shape of a champagne bottle on ice! There’s a photo of it here: http://www.the-purple-giraffe.com/2012/01/1st-run-5k-2012-race-recap.html
I need one of those cool medal racks like you have!

  5. well, I only have 3 medals so far and 2 of those are featured above! RnRNOLA 2012 will always be a special medal since it was my first half. What can I say about RO that you didn’t above?! Goodness, that was a tough one, but I will forever be proud of what I personally and we as a team accomplished that weekend. It was the first time I ever slammed into “the wall” and had to break it down brick by brick to get to the other side. I don’t think I will ever get back on that levee, unless they change the time of year for the race…but ultra relays..oh, yeah-I’ll be doing more of those…Ragnar Key West 2014??? ;)

  6. Love this post — I am so excited to email you my fave bling! I’ve only got 4 so far, but a few more to come this fall! But I definitely have one favorite already!

  7. I love your medal holders!

  8. I love that BELIEVE race medal holder!

  9. I keep my medals on a hook by my entry way that was actually meant for jackets. But clearly medals are nicer. And that way everybody HAS to look at them. It also has a mirror on it if that makes your mom feel any better. :)

  10. This is great! Emailed you with my fave.

  11. dannnnng girl you’ve got some bling!! I LOVE all of the disney medals. I need to own one… by the end of 2013 I totally will. darnit! ;)

my favorite medal in my collection (my tiny collection) is my Cherry Blossom 10 miler medal from this april. its beautiful and huge with cherry blossom trees and the lincoln memorial in the background. so gorgeous :)

  12. Lovin’ that bling! I now have to race medals! One is hanging, the other is in a log (literally!) :)

  13. This post makes me so excited to get my first race bling. Fingers crossed I have it by the end of the year, so I can keep my New Year’s Resolution.

  14. I desperately need a medal rack! All my medals are in a drawer. ;-)

  15. My favorite is the Princess 2012. It’s my first, and so far only, half marathon but I’m hopefully going to add to my growing collection in December.

  16. This is such a fun post! I love your race stories and the pics! My medals are all in a drawer, but I think the medal hangers are worth it – they look so good!

  17. All of these amazing races sound like so much fun! Thanks for sharing and introducing me to all of these great bloggers. There are now so many more races that I want to be able to participate in!!

  18. I don’t have any medals yet – just started running about a month ago but looking forward to the day that I can hang a few on my wall! Love those medals.
