Final countdown to runDisney Marathon Weekend

It’s almost here! It’s almost here! This time next week I will be in Disney for the runDisney marathon weekend/Goofy’s challenge! I can’t believe it, it seemed so far away when I registered for the event, and now it’s actually happening. Don’t worry, I will be live tweeting and instagraming the whole time so you don’t have to miss a thing! (Also be sure to follow hashtags #WDWmarathon #WDWhalf and #GoofyChallenge to stay in the middle of the action!)

The fun starts on Thursday, with the races happening on Saturday and Sunday. The weather looks warm, so I am still trying to decide on what outfits I will wear for race day. Obviously, running skirts will be involved. (save 15% on runningskirts products with code “SKIRTSASS” at checkout!)

There is a side story to marathon weekend that I wanted to share with you as well. Cigna has been a long time sponsor of the runDisney events, and I wanted to share something cool The Cigna Foundation is doing this year for the race.

The Cigna Foundation will sponsor six Students Run Philly Style athletes at the Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend.

What is this and what does it mean? Students Run Philly Style is a marathon training program to help Philly’s youth. SRPS connects each student with a volunteer mentor or “running leader” and the students not only learn about running, but also character development, and leadership skills. It is a safe haven from bullying, and for those trying to combat childhood obesity.

Through a very physically challenging training program, the running leaders are able to teach the students to become strong, long-distance runners and strong, positive young people. They have a goal of completing either a half or full marathon. The students aged 12-18 run with their leaders for nine months so they can accomplish their race goal, all while learning from a positive role model.

Cigna, who has a relationship with Students Run Philly Style, is sponsoring six young people through Cigna’s corporate responsibility program Cigna connects, to come down and run during marathon weekend. How cool is that?

Huge props to Cigna for helping these kids out and getting them to the starting line of the race so they can follow their dreams!

QOTD: Have you ever volunteered at a running event or for a program like this one?

  1. Hi I’m a new reader (nice to meet you). I’m a grad student studying exercise psychology and the research that I’m doing my thesis on is a mentoring program for overweight/ obese youth. My kids aren’t training for any kind of endurance event, but they workout with a college student who teaches them about exercise and strategies to become healthier. Anyways, thank you so so much for sharing about this program. I am SUPER interesting in looking into it a little more.

    • Hi! thanks so much for reading my blog! That’s so cool what you are studying! They are super nice and I am sure would answer any questions you had on their facebook page that I posted the link to!

  2. WOW!! Awesome!! Good luck girlie! I know you will rock it!

  3. Good luck with all your final prep! I hope you have an amazing weekend. That’s so cool that Cigna is sponsoring the Students Run Philly Style Students. I run a lot of races in Philly and it’s amazing to see these young people out there on the race course. Definitely inspires me to work harder.

  4. Ahhh you’re going to do awesome! I’m hoping to do this next year. Can’t wait to hear how it is! I’ll be wearing a tutu ;)

  5. Very cool what Cigna is doing. I’m in countdown mode too… one week til the Houston marathon! Best of luck in your race!

  6. Ah! Good luck! I can’t wait to read your posts from the happiest place on earth! :)

  7. Woohoo! I can’t wait!!!!!

  8. It’s SO close!! I can’t believe it!

  9. Good luck! I haven’t really been able to walk properly after both my halves, so I can’t imagine having to do a full the very next day. You’re gonna rock it!

  10. Good luck with the races. I am volunteering this year, so I’ll be on the lookout for you.

  11. Yeeeeeeeeeee!!! So exciting!!!

  12. Wahoo! So excited for you! Hope both races will be great! Praying for no cramps or health issues! Can’t wait to see the race recap! Enjoy!

  13. Jacinta Dawson says:

I volunteered during the Space Coast Half-Marathon and Marathon weekend this past November in Cocoa, FL. My husband was running his first half marathon so I didn’t have an excuse not to be there. The kids and I (ages 13 and 7) were road guards and the best part was cheering everyone on to the finish.

I’m working up to the 2013 Space Coast Half being my first. Another first….we’ll also be at WDW for the full this weekend; my husband’s first marathon!!! I’m so excited for him.

  14. Hi Heather – I volunteered with Students Run Philly Style before coming to Ethiopia for Peace Corps (wearing a Students Run hoodie as I type this in my Ethiopia home). I actually went down with the group last year for the weekend, and participated in Goofy. The kids absolutely loved it. Many who participate in the program have never been out of the city. I have hardly seen happiness like they experienced last year. I hope you get to see them on course during the half. I also hope you will check them out at the Speaker Series at the expo. It’s quite inspiring to hear them talk about the role of running and SRPS in their lives.

Have a blast out there, I know you will. It’s so much fun. You have nothing to worry about with Goofy. Just take your time and soak in the atmosphere. Cheers!

  15. Thanks for spreading the word about Students Run Philly Style. I am one of the adult volunteers that accompanied the 6 runners. They are very excited and shining examples of how good health and fitness can impact your life it other ways. Huge thanks to Cigna for the sponsorship.
