Humidity and Sweet Tea

Huh? ok here goes.

I had a good run this morning. FINALLY! I looked up the weather on my iphone and saw it “felt like” 91, with 75% humidity. SCORE! Isn’t that sad, that those numbers make me happy? ALSO, it was overcast. Double score! You can bet I laced up and took off! It. felt. great. For the first time in months, I actaully wasn’t dying by 1/2 a mile in, and I was actually *gasp* smiling! I did 3 miles, stopped twice for 10 seconds each to drink water (I am not capable of drinking a lot of water and running at the same time…it’s not pretty) I felt GOOD after, and was happy, not frustrated and discouraged. Sure, I was still soaking wet and it was plenty hot, but it’s that dang humidity, dry heat is SO much more bearable!

Look what I found:
The National Weather Service considers it dangerous to exercise when the heat and humidity meet (or exceed) the below combinations.

HEAT HUMIDITY
86° F 90%
88° F 80%
90° F 70%
92° F 60%
94° F 55%
96° F 45%
98° F 40%
(See noaa.gov for the complete chart.)

Also, HERE is a really good artice about how heat/humidity affects your run.

All summer I have been struggling mentally with my running. Why am I slow? Am I actually geting worse? This is not fun! Today prooved that I may be slow, but I am not getting worse. I am thankful for the heat to make me a stronger runner, but that doesn’t mean I can’t wait for fall!

Oh ya, tomorrow is FREE TEA DAY at McAlisters!!! The lines get really long, so go at an off time like 10:30 or 2:00 or something. You can bet I will be there with my tea tumbler! What is a tea tumbler you ask? Go to McAlisters and find out!

Also, here is a big shout out to Skinny Runner for featuring me on her awesome blog this morning. Go check it out!

QOTD: Do you have a weather problem where you live? Snow? Heat? what?

Comments

  1. Ugh! I am running so slow in this soup, too. I finally just gave up and starting leaving my Garmin at home on my short/easy runs. It makes it a lot easier for me mentally to just get the mileage done without worrying about pace. Otherwise I just get too frustrated! I am also looking forward to the fall—mmm crispy cool air!

  2. Well, what to say about Dutch weather? Hmmm… when it’s hot it’s about 95 degrees with 2000% humidity. When it’s not hot, it’s raining and cold. That’s it. I prefer the cold weather for running; that humidity kills your running! It really does; makes you feel like a 90 year old smoker that goes on a run for the first time ever!

  3. I’m training for the Los Angeles Half Marathon in October and I am training in the ARIZONA heat. Ugh it’s so bad. I don’t know why I continue registering for runs that I have to train for in the summer time. I guess I never learn.

  4. I live in central Illinois, so in the summer is no problem, but in the winter it’s a biznatch to get to the gym. You have to dig out your car from the snow, warm it up for 20, drive 15 minutes to gym, go workout for an hour, warm-up your cold car for a few, drive home. The whole process extends your workout trip by almost an hour! :(

I used to live in SC though, so I feel your pain on the heat. Humidity is a may-jah run-killer. Free sweet tea sounds heavenly! Hope your “free sweet tea” day is fantastic! :)

  5. I currently live in an area with dry heat…. or at least I thought it got pretty hot. But I’m two weeks away from moving to Arizona. When I went house hunting down there, it never cooled down! It was nearly 100º even at 2-3 a.m. ew haha. I’m excited to play in the heat! But I can’t for the life of me, stand humidity. Guess it’s because I’m a California girl, born and raised.

    • Good luck on your move! People on the west coast always say to run in the morning before it gets hotbut they don’t understand the morning is the most humid part of the day lol!

  6. That heat index is interesting…it’s not like we’ve ever run in heat like that, huh? LOL

Can’t wait for free sweet tea day tomorrow! We are ordering out for an early lunch at work! :0))

  7. I came over from Skinnyrunner and I love your blog! You have a new follower!

  8. Hi! Stopping by from SR… I am most definitely a new follower!

  9. I love McAlisters! We had them in Ohio, but we moved to Illinois and they aren’t up here yet. I don’t mind the heat in summer, but my two Labs do much better on our long walks when it cools down.
