5 Things I Have Learned About Lifting Weights

I have been talking up boot camp for awhile now, and it’s because I have seen changes in my body like I never saw when I was just running. I always assumed I was “in shape” because I could run a marathon, but y’all, I really wasn’t in overall good health/shape. lifting weights has helped me in so many ways though!

I have urged, begged, and pleaded with you in the past to start strength training if you are mainly just doing cardio, and yup, I’m going to do it again. I would love to make a believer out of you! Here are five things I have learned since I started lifting.

1.) You burn calories for longer: When you lift weights, you have the potential to burn calories for HOURS after, even while you sit on your couch. Your muscles have to repair themselves, so yup, better calorie burn for you, without the extra work! I don’t know about you, but I much prefer burning calories in my PJ’s on the couch than actually having to stay at the gym for an extra hour.

2.) You will look better: Let’s face it. Someone who looks strong looks healthy. My posture is better, my arms look better in a tank top, and I have gotten rid of a lot of excess jiggly flab all over my body. I feel way more toned and tight than I ever did just running. I love it!

3.) You will run faster: Lifting has made my legs way stronger, so I am able to run faster than before with less running workouts. I have the strength to hold my body in proper running form longer, too. I was so surprised to PR in my 5K last month because I only run once a week right now!

4.) You probably won’t bulk up: I say probably because you can bulk up, but it is highly unlikely it will happen unless you are trying to. I go to boot camp and lift four days a week and while I am more toned, I do not feel bulky. Don’t let this common misconception stop you!

5.) You will feel more confident: Looking better, feeling better, and being able to do more with my body has given me such a sense of accomplishment. I am not as afraid to try new things, and I am so thankful that for all that my body does for me every day. It’s just this overall sense of wellness that is kind of addicting. Join me?

As always, please check with your doctor before starting an exercise routine. You will probably be really sore at first but don’t give up! Sore is good. Live for the sore! Let’s all be healthy and fit this summer.

Five Things Friday VII

TGIF! It’s been a long week around here, I had to pull some shifts at the yogurt shop + my other jobs + taking care of little bit, so I’m worn slap out. Anyone have fun weekend plans? I shall live vicariously through you from the comfort of my couch.

1.) Bootcamp is kicking my butt. I went 5 days last week and 4 days this week, and I have muscles that hurt that I didn’t even know I had. I have learned that 1.) My triceps are SUPER weak and 2.) I really hate burpees.

3.) Don’t judge, but I think we will put up our Christmas tree this weekend. I want it up for Thanksgiving when my parents come in town, and the weekend prior to Thanksgiving is looking kind of hectic, so it may be this weekend. Get excited.

4.) Operation Christmas Child shoebox collection week is next week. This is something near and dear to my heart and I have been doing it since the third grade. I plan to do a periscope showing what to pack and how to pack it for those interested. It may be today if I have time, I will tweet about it ahead of time.

5.) Today is the LAST DAY to register for the Holiday Shred hosted by my good friend Bobbi. If you need accountability to get you to and through the holidays without gaining weight then join in the fun! I will be participating!

Bootcamp and Weekend Thoughts

 

Good morning friends! Guess what?

I was so bummed when I missed out on the last round of Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp, so I wanted to be sure I didn’t miss out this time. I registered early, have printed out my workouts, and I can’t wait to get started today! I will be updating my progress during the next eight weeks. This will be good for me since I am not running for another 1.5 weeks…it will give me something else to focus on. (By the way you won’t believe this but I got a splinter in the bottom of my inured foot. How in the WOLRD! That thing is not coming out either!)

Round Two

A few things on my mind this weekend….

1.) Waivers went up for the Disneyland half. This made me very excited…and very scared. If and that’s a big IF I can run August 1st, I will have exactly one month to get ready for this half marathon. Prior to my injury I had run one 7 miler and one 9 miler as far as long runs go…and they were a month ago…yikes. We aren’t running this race for time anyway, but still, it’s scary.

2.) Next, my awesome husband gave me patio furniture for my birthday and i took it upon myself to start putting it together. I put together this chair and a coffee table. Took me about an hour, and there is another chair AND a couch to put together…I think I will leave those to Bobby. That was tough! Why is it when things require assembly that the screws and holes never line up properly?!?

3.) I am now obsessed with the show Once Upon a Time. I just finished all eight seasons of Desperate Housewives on Hulu Plus (by the way, what are yall’s thoughts on the ending? I thought it was so-so.) Anyway, my buddy Karen had told me about this show awhile back and when I saw it was on Hulu, I decided to start the series this weekend. I am loving it so far! If you haven’t seen it be sure to check it out.
