Valentine’s Day as a Kid

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

The other day, Jen and I were talking about Valentine’s Day, and how as a kid it’s a lot of fun at school parties etc. Then it’s also fun when you are dating, but it seems after you get married (at least in our cases) it just isn’t that important. Bobby always tells me not to get him anything because it’s a holiday for the ladies. We go to dinner, but never on the actual day, way to crowded. Oh, and roses, I would KILL him if he paid for overpriced roses on Valentines day. That’s just how we roll.

roses are great any other day of the year for this girl.

But back to being a kid, my family always did a great job of making it special for me. My mom would make us pink heart shaped pancakes in the morning, and have a little goody bag for us of candy, and usually a CD or DVD. She would cut our sandwiches with heart shaped cookie cutters, put special treats in our lunches, and when we would come home at night, my dad would give my sister and I each a box of heart shaped chocolates. Every year.

At school we would have parties and make mailboxes out of shoe boxes, and then go around the room handing out our Valentines to our classmates. We were hopped up on sugar all day, and it would continue when we got home an had more candy from our parents.

Who needs Valentine’s Day when you have Mardi Gras?

I miss those fun days, and can’t wait to celebrate with my future kids and let them know how much they are loved, like my parents always showed me.

QOTD: What did you do as a kid for Valentine’s Day? What do you do now? Any traditions?

Sugar Detox

It’s no secret I am addicted to sugar. I have always loved candy and chocolate, ice cream and brownies…and sweet tea.

I workout a lot, yes, but I am also well aware that my eating habits are not always as they should be. I am STILL having issues getting rid of a couple of pesky pounds from the cruise and vacation, so I know exercise is just not enough for me right now.

I am taking drastic (for me) measures….I am laying off the sugar for a whole week to see if it helps me. YIKES! I know some of you are probably going “geez Heather, that’s super easy, what’s the big deal?” Oh, friends. If only you knew how bad the addiction is….

I know when some people sugar detox they get rid of ALL forms of any kind of sugar. Well folks, that would be a surefire way to see my head start spinning, followed by lots of crying and name calling.

I started on Monday, and decided to not completely shock my system I would still eat things like fruit, etc, but steer clear of snacks like candy with sugar, cookies, and the like. I also allowed myself to put my flavored creamer in my coffee, but that’s it. I was doing ok on Monday until after dinner when I usually have a sweet dessert…I got really cranky and tried to distract myself so I wouldn’t think about it. I am crossing my fingers I can make it through the whole week without a slip up!

What are your secrets for dealing with a sugar detox? I would love to hear!

QOTD: Any sugar detox tips? Do you struggle with this like I do?

Chocolate Éclair Pie

Hola! The week is just movin right along eh? Fine by me, I am gearing up for vacation! I have been busy working all day, and making a vaca packing list. oy. It is a long one. Going to a condo makes you pack all this kitchen stuff, but hey, it’s worth it!

Sassy says “nnoooo, take me with yoooouuuu! I promise to not whine in the car.” yeah right Sassy. Like you would EVER not whine in the car. It’s just not possible.

But first, I wanted to share an awesome, EASY dessert recipe with you all. I make this for Thanksgiving, and a lot in the summers because I like nice cool desserts in summer. It’s SO simple but delicious. You will eat all of it. Really.

Chocolate Éclair Pie:

PIE INGREDIENTS:

2 small packs French Vanilla Instant Pudding

3 cups milk

1 8oz. cool whip

1 box Graham crackers

———————-

-Mix vanilla pudding and milk.

-Then spoon cool whip into pudding and mix together.

– Put a layer of graham crackers in a pan (I do a 13 x 0 or two glass dishes, one 8 x 8 and one 9 x 7 maybe?), a layer of pudding over the crackers, another laoer of graham crackers, then remainder of pudding, then yet another layer of graham crackers on top.

–  Top with chocolate sauce and keep cold in refrigerator.

SAUCE INGREDIENTS:

2 cups powdered sugar

2 and 1/2 tablespoons cocoa

2 tablespoons melted butter

———————————————–

Then add enough HOT water to make is spreadable.   Be very careful when adding the water…it only takes a little….if you make a mistake and pour too much water you can add more powdered sugar to make thick again.  You don’t want the sauce “soupy” but instead just barely spreadable.

-pour over graham cracker top and spread evenly.

It will be a big hit, I promise. We ate the square one at the BBQ and Bobby brought the other one to work where it was devoured like a fat kid eating cake. Holy yum. This has been one of my favorites my mom makes back from when I was a little girl.

———————————————————

On the running front, I took an unscheduled rest day yesterday. I felt fine except for my knee, so decided it could use a day of rest. I will cross train and lift today and then my shoes should be here this afternoon, then I will try a run tomorrow and of course Saturday. I will keep you posted! Oh some of you were asking more specifically about the knee pain…it’s the inside of my knee, right above where I bend my knee, but below the knee cap and more inside from the knee cap. it is tender to the touch and after sitting for a long period is VERY stiff upon standing. Hmmpph.

QOTD: Did your mom or dad make a favorite dessert of yours growing up?

Almost that time…

well, tomorrow is the day we leave (well, kinda today) We head to my parents today, then drive the rest of the way to Orlando tomorrow morning at 3:30, yes, 3:30 am! I am starting to get nervous. As I was standing out in the cold this morning, I thought to myself… “it will be colder than this the morning of the race.” BBRR!!!

My hip is giving me a little trouble this morning, so hopefully that isn’t a bad sign for the race.

For breakfast I had some almonds, a glass of milk with some protein powder, and a granola bar. I need to start taking pics, I am still new at this thing!

On a happy note, I think some of my Christmas weight is slowly coming off….I was hovering right at a certain weight for like…3 weeks because of all the junk I had been eating, and I have been trying to avoid all that junk and so I am starting to go back to what I was before Thanksgiving…slowly…

by the way, in case anyone cares, I am a HUGE chocolate fan, sweets fan, oh yes. i cannot live without sugar. So do not be alarmed when and if I list any foods I had if I list some not so healthy things. I try to have a balance, but I must have sugar in my life!!!
