Tampa Tuesdays: Busch Gardens Tampa

On Saturday, Bobby and I took Emma Kate to Busch Gardens Tampa. It was our first experience in the park aside from seeing a small portion when we went for a media event a few weeks ago. I did a little bit of research to at least know what we did and didn’t want to do, and we arrived at the park when it opened at 10:00 (which I thought was late!)

2017-04-01_12-53-37_941

Getting on the tram at the parking lot was a little hectic as there was no one there to keep people in order, and there were no true “lines”. We had a family try and push us out of the way to get on the tram (I was holding EK in my arms!) and I had to yell at a guy to let Bobby get on the tram with us b/c he had the stroller and people were pushing in front of him. However, I tried to shake it off and not let it ruin the day. The park can’t control what other people do, and it wasn’t their fault. We made it to the front, and bag check was smooth and quick.

I wanted Bobby to get to ride at least one roller coaster, so he jumped in line for Cheetah Hunt because it said there was only a ten minute wait. I took Emma Kate to go visit some animals while we waited.

2017-04-01_10-53-00_638

After about 30 minutes I texted Bobby and he was still in line. I was not thrilled because Emma Kate was getting bored and wanted to go ride the train. We visited the giraffes which there was SO many of, very cool, and then waited some more.

2017-04-01_11-07-27_234

All in all he was gone a total of 45 minutes for a ten minute wait, so I’m not sure what happened there. Maybe it temporarily broke down and we didn’t realize. Either way, nothing we could do to change it so we moved along and got in line for the train.

2017-04-01_11-21-39_728

It was fun seeing the animals along the route. A very nice touch. We decided to get off at the next stop and go see the monkeys and the tigers. This guy was just sitting up at the glass staring at all the kids. Emma Kate kept saying she wanted to hold him, of course.

2017-04-01_11-54-54_787

We also saw a couple of sleepy tigers. I loved all the lush landscaping in their habitats with multiple vantage points to view them from.

By this time it was after noon, and we were getting  hungry. We tried to get Emma Kate to nap in her stroller as we walked down towards the Food and Wine festival area.

2017-04-01_12-10-31_710

I love how the booths are mainly contained to two areas so you don’t have to walk all that far to get from one to another. Also, there were no long lines to wait in which was a plus.

2017-04-01_12-12-38_114

We each had an 8 pack sampler card courtesy of Busch Gardens, and were ready to enjoy the festival. (These can be purchased at the booths, and also you can find festival guides at each booth with a map and list of all the food and drink offerings.)

2017-04-01_12-15-33_808

First up, Bobby got the lamb chops and a mango margarita, which got two thumbs up.

2017-04-01_12-14-36_989

We then headed over towards the two Coke booths, which are next door to an inside air conditioned area with tables. We were happy to find this spot, as it was getting HOT outside. Bobby got a couple more things to eat and I got a pulled pork slider. After a brief rest, we headed over towards the concert area where there were a lot of other booths.

Bobby tried some ribs, and I got my favorite: the bacon mac and cheese, which was just as delicious as I remembered it. Emma Kate loved it, too and kept stealing my bacon.

2017-04-01_12-57-33_491

We both also had watermelon margaritas, which would become our favorite drink of the festival. (I may have had three.) I may have also had a regular margarita on the rocks at the margarita bar while we were in this area.

Emma Kate had been dying to “see Elmo” in the kids area, so we went there next. This area was great. TONS to do for kids all confined to one very large space. She was so overwhelmed we weren’t sure what to do first. She rode several rides, and even did a small “water ride” by herself!

2017-04-01_13-58-27_824

2017-04-01_14-02-07_309

We put her in the bounce house because she LOVES those things, but there were a lot of big kids in there and she got upset and wanted to get out. We also did the carousel, and she climbed up in a large tree house area with Bobby.

Seriously we could have stayed in this area all day and Emma Kate would have been jjuussttt fine. There was also a huge really cool looking splash pad area, but we decided to skip that one for the day because it was already getting late in the day and we were all tired. We did however have one more stop to make, the show with Elmo and the gang! EK clapped and waved, and even got to touch Grover which I think made her whole day. This area was covered and had fans which was a very nice touch on such a sunny afternoon. There were also plenty of benches and other seating around the whole kids area for moms and dads to take a rest as the kids played.

2017-04-01_14-31-39_445

We still had a couple of punches left on our food and wine cards, so Bobby got some steak and said it was his favorite dish of the day.

2017-04-01_14-52-07_203

We met up with Megan and Gabe for a few minutes and chatted at a table and people watched before calling it a day. Check out the cool topiary in the background!

2017-04-01_15-23-28_801

2017-04-01_15-31-56_845

The park is really big, and there was no way we could have done everything in a day, which just means we will have to go back!

2017-04-01_15-33-10_111

Not five minutes after leaving the park, this one fell asleep in the car. I think that’s a sign of a good day!

2017-04-01_16-32-03_605

A huge thanks to Busch Gardens for inviting us back to experience the park and the food and wine festival. Don’t forget, you can experience it for yourself every weekend through the end of this month, and there is a free concert every night of the festival with your park admission! Check out BuschGardens.com for the lineup and information.

Disclosure: I was provided free park admission for two as well as lanyards to try out the food at the festival. However, I was not asked to write a blog post about it, but we had a great time and I wanted too! Also, all opinions are my own.

**I would love it if you would take a quick second to fill out a 6 question survey about how you plan Disney vacations. Thanks in advance!**

Emma Kate: 2.5 Years Old

Has it already been six months since I have written one of these? Since Emma Kate’s Frozen themed birthday party? So much has happened since then, like moving to Florida, taking on new and different work, and of course, so many changes in our now two and a half year old girl.

ssAAe8v3FZQczOysb-L5PXW2IthMV8d8Jabns-pJFVApX92IB

Before we get into personality and that type of milestone, let’s go over her stats. Emma Kate weighs just shy of 33 pounds, and is in the 83% for weight. She is 38 inches tall, which is 95%. She basically hasn’t gained much weight but has thinned out and is growing upwards, which is good!

She is in size 5 diapers in the daytime and 6 for nighttime ones. We just moved her into a size 8 sneaker, but she can still wear a 7 in some sandals. She is in 4T footie PJ’s, and in 3T-4T clothing except for dresses where she can still fit into some 2T.

MSgQ2r7sF0k-HalMA0_nAb0s1b4bMZR5aD3pRpRfazIpX92IB

As far as speech goes…girlfriend talks non stop. She says the funniest things and we are constantly laughing at what comes out of her mouth. I love how she mispronounces words, too. Our dog, Bella, she calls “Bell-do”. It’s adorable, and I will be so upset when she starts saying her name the right way! She also says “hold you!” instead of hold me. The other day she said it correctly, and it made me so sad! She hasn’t gotten into asking “why” yet, but a phrase I hear at least 1000000 times a day is “what happened?”

DSC_0018

She is super independent and says “I do it myself” to almost everything. She wants to walk everywhere, and I rarely carry her. She is NOT into hand holding, so that has been a challenge, but she will at least hold our hand to cross the street. She can put her sneakers on herself, and tries to put on socks and sandals. Some days she wants to pick out her clothes, and some days I pick for her and she doesn’t fuss (relief!) She wants to get in the car seat by herself, walk the dog herself, and the list goes on and on.

eJWW8mHCa9k_YqJDKuktD6xBMypbzgGZvZMsjDuEhuIpX92IB

We are smack dab in the middle of potty training, and I think it’s going really well for the minimal effort I have put into it so far (not wanting to push her or stress about it). About half the time she tells us she needs to go, but the other half we have to remind/ask her. From the get go she wanted to go on the big potty as opposed to the training potty. We are about to move her into pull-ups for school because she is doing so well there. We make a HUGE deal when she goes, jumping up and down and screaming, and she loves it and cheers along with us.

DSC_0082

She is a tricky little thing, and now will say things like “I need candy to make my tummy feel better” good try, kid. She also is all about stalling bedtime now, saying things like “’nother kiss!” or “I so cold!”

Speaking of sleep, she has been doing really well and survived the recent time change relatively unscathed. We put her to bed at 7:45, and she sleeps until about 6:30. The only time she wakes up at night is if she wants more water, and the other night was our first experience with her waking up due to a bad dream. As far as naps go, she still doesn’t nap long, right around an hour to an hour and ten minutes usually, and about once a week at school she doesn’t nap at all. She is still in her crib, I am hanging on to that one as long as I can! She can climb out of it, but hasn’t attempted to during nap or at night yet so we are thankful for that. I always tell her “have good/sweet dreams” at night before bed, and in the morning when I go get her, the first thing she says is “I had good dreams!”

0TAgvKtgNj3ZM5pzsTyeK7PNeFgvZ4COz3-SufthIr8pX92IB

Emma Kate has gotten really cuddly as of late, which is interesting because she never was a cuddly baby. She wants to sit in my lap, hug and hold Bella (who by the way has gotten better with her, too), and gives hugs and kisses to everyone (zero stranger danger!) When we watch movies she wants me to sit down next to her on the sofa, and she covers us up with blankets.

5SX0rN-wbwvLF0VTGeiMEHhiCAJQQU0_dl8qZxwkP70pX92IB

As far as playtime goes, she is in to lots of different things. She likes to cook in her kitchen, and play mama to her babies. She will feed them, rock them in her rocking chair, and put them to bed. She likes loading up her shopping cart full of figurines and things and brings it into the living room, dumps it out and then lines up everything on the coffee table. She loves to be outside, so we have been going on family walks, going to the playground, and going to the pool (which she loves!)

DSC_0160

She is still very much into YouTube kids on the iPad, and her newest thing is watching movies. Thankfully it’s not the same one over and over, well…maybe for a a week then she moves on. The most popular ones lately have been Frozen, Tangled, the 3 Toy Story movies, Monsters Inc., and Beauty and the Beast. I never thought we would get to the point where she would sit for a solid hour and watch a movie but she does and it’s fun to experience my favorite Disney classics with her.

G8t60c9CRrMrbTcL9hicMcTpYAitn-S3O-44m4iAiocpX92IB

Emma Kate still loves to eat, and now is always asking for a snack. For breakfast she eats anything from eggs to waffles to cereal to yogurt. For snacks she likes pouches, fruit snacks, goldfish crackers, apples, strawberries, and popcorn. She is her mothers child and loves cheese and candy, but we definitely limit both. She still drinks SO much water, which I guess is a good thing except at night when you are trying to potty train!

aSVDyJvFR-wDCZUKAPRF8XLKZVpCUF933gvDEY3VxUMpX92IB

We have taken her on a few day trips to Disney World and she loves the “big castle” as well as the parade. She really has warmed up to the characters, and gives them big hugs and kisses. She now asks us when she is going back to Disney World, and that she wants to go see her friends like Ana and Elsa and Olaf.

RXHkao8LPJJr_LILDIdYKvOdpPG-JeQCYT-UcSaVU7MpX92IB

She is generally a super happy very funny girl (aside from a few two year old/strong willed tantrums), and listens for the most part with just a few times here and there of having to go to time out. We are in a good groove with her right now, and I hope it continues! Either way, we can’t believe we are on the down side to having a three year old! I will update again in 6 months when I’m sure she will have changed even more. We love our bug and can’t wait to see what’s next!

Emma Kate Does Disney: Part 4

We left off part 3 with the family heading to the Contemporary to eat brunch at Chef Mickeys. Since we had a little bit of a typical two year old behavioral issue at Crystal Palace, I was really hoping Chef Mickeys would be better, and not as new or overwhelming as her first character meal.

oKVvKpl01WlzU2BjSl5TtIGXjmodKHAXvjk2BRD-g3MpX92IB

Donald was the first to come around and she was pretty shy. She didn’t want to sit in a high chair or regular chair, so she was in our laps for most of the meal. She let Donald take a picture with her, but she wouldn’t hug him or stand by him.

x-xXZLY7tEZKqORw-107ZXTfCLyKQkKdWwEocbl4DgcpX92IB

She did however get to watch the characters get closer and closer so I think that helped her to “warm up” a little bit. She LOVED Minnie mouse and got down on the floor to hug her. Minnie did a great job getting down to Emma Kate’s level which was appreciated.

f0HYp28YFeXKp14PJfcn-1xj6WXy8-o5X4lHctlhJJQpX92IB

She really loved Pluto and his nose and “big tongue” the best though. She got antsy towards the end of the meal and wanted to run around, but overall she did way better than the Crystal Palace meal.

uCsr4lT2Uf_rYMSBmEpQ5HR3mirLm6yVjAZv2xr07f0pX92IB

After the meal, we walked around the back of the Contemporary out by the pool. I love that there is a little selfie station so everyone could get in the picture.

yMXSkwz4DG1gXMN_skT88T0bt9_0B0AF1pms6451YSgpX92IB

When we got back to the resort, Emma Kate wanted to go to the pool (shocker), so my dad and I took her while my mom went shopping, since my mom had her the whole day before while I was house hunting with my dad. We may or may not have brought wine to the pool in Styrofoam cups. Hey, it’s 5:00 somewhere, right?

jKSZ6gFd38QIvYq8fPr2hlUPuAsHKY8kFkBiwGlp3bwpX92IB

I couldn’t believe the amazing weather we were having. It wasn’t hot at all for October in central Florida.

nZVf4ddQRUCy4CzKyFp3jLRvnA7lhKWeHeYlkWU5Xv4pX92IB

We eventually moved over to the big pool.

2wXHh730IHYoXM9SSR-ajFMBPYzrBE3I0kvf59jVgFspX92IB

I honestly can’t remember what we did for dinner that night it’s been so long now, but I know we didn’t go anywhere. Brunch was so late we were probably too full! It was early to bed again, because we were going to Epcot the next day to finally meet Ana and Elsa, the one thing Emma Kate had been talking about for weeks. Stay tuned to see how that went!

QOTD: Have you ever been to Chef Mickey’s? Do you usually do character meals in Disney?

February 2017 Goals

I was determined to be on time with this month’s goals, so I think publishing on February 2nd is a win! It’s hard to believe the first month of 2017 is already in the books. How are you doing with your monthly/yearly goals? Still dreaming big? Keeping track? Let’s take a look at my January goals first and see how I did:

1.) Organize my closet: A+ I’m super happy about this one. My goal was to figure out a system that worked well for us while we budget for me to turn an extra room into a big closet. Bobby generously offered to give me the whole master closet! His hanging clothes now live in the extra room closet. he doesn’t have many so they all fit, and now I have the master all to myself! I still need to buy a few more hangers, but I pretty much have everything how I want it, and now I can actually see all of my clothes and  not wear the same thing over and over.

2.) Fix my workout routine: B- This is still a work in progress, but getting better! The past two Saturdays I have been able to go on long runs. Also, in addition to my two Orangetheory workouts every week, I did a day of cross training. I still need to figure out how to fit one more workout in, but I am happy with my progress so far.

O_iCjooYGgNVu00MZprY-WLoUylUbyVO0qpf3tZX-2spX92IB

3.) Eat better: C- If you will remember, I kind of wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted this to look like. Because of that, my goal wasn’t measurable, and I set myself up for failure. I had little “spurts” where I would pay more attention to what I ate, but I don’t feel like I got a handle on it. I need to be more specific with my plan. Learn from my mistake!

——————————————

February goals:

1.) Track my food intake 1-2 days a week: As a measurable goal, I feel like this will work better for me. I use the My Fitness Pal app to track food, and it is a good reality check for me. However, I hate being a slave to calorie counting, so I will not do it every day. I think if I check in on myself and my habits one or two times a week it will help me out.

2.) Take Emma Kate to Disney: She has been asking to go see the big castle again, and she hasn’t been since before Christmas. It’s time to take her back since we live so close.

chef5

3.) Time Block My days: I have been having a hard time staying focused the past couple of weeks. I end up on rabbit trails on social media, or wandering from thing to thing in the house not really getting anywhere. I am going to start using my journal to (loosely) time block and see if that helps me stay on track this month.

QOTD: Did you meet your January goals? Have any February ones?

Emma Kate Does Disney: Part 3

I left off part 2 with us going to bed Thursday night. Friday morning, my dad and I drove to Tampa to look at homes with the realtor while my mom stayed behind with Emma Kate. They went to Disney Springs for the morning while we were gone, and then the playground after nap.

Dad and I also looked at a couple daycares and found one I loved. I found a house that we ended up putting in an offer on that evening, and after stopping at the grocery store in Celebration and then picking up pizza, we headed to the pool and met up with my mom and EK.. Eating pizza at the splash pad area while EK played was a nice relaxing time, especially after a crazy day house hunting. (there may have been wine involved, too. Ssshhh)

On Saturday we got up early and headed to Animal Kingdom. EK loves animals, so I was excited to take her on the safari ride in particular. We had fastpasses and headed there first thing. It was a cool morning so the animals were all out and about and active. We even got to hear the male lion roar which I had never heard before.

3gMrBM_NPSqe2j3uCTyRewsK9MG2xZxcUiGrWb4PUrwpX92IB

After that we walked through some of the zoo like areas, and then headed to the boneyard playground where we stayed for over an hour. I loved that it was closed in so I didn’t have to worry about Emma Kate running off.

We had chef Mickey’s brunch reservations at 2:30, so we loaded up and headed to the contemporary for a late lunch/early dinner. I was so curious to see how Emma Kate would do with the fab five after doing just so-so with the Winnie the Pooh characters.

Stay tuned for next time to see how brunch went with Mickey and the gang!

Imaginative Play with LEGO® DUPLO ®

I am really loving the age that Emma Kate is at right now. Just in the past month, her language has exploded, her motor skills have gotten a lot better, and she has gotten way more imaginative with playtime, which is also really fun for me! One of her new favorite things to do is to play with LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.

gzUUTvXW227Cr8jrgs0Zr2X2dAvBud2s4Kxc2jd4gt8pX92IB

These preschool building toys are specially designed for little hands (ages 1½ – 5 years old). They are much larger than regular LEGO® bricks (twice the size!) Making them safer for toddlers and preschoolers and easier for them to handle.

7b2RFOiwZySkyyZQpbDMYm9OgDlnrLtsnbaHowgHiV4pX92IB

I have to admit, playing with these toys brought back so many childhood memories for me, I love how LEGO® bricks have stood the test of time, and more than 25 years after I played with them in my living room, now my daughter is playing with them in our living room!

iXCsRJLEnBQEU-9BujBA3G8n2DhAB1XJ_3Z0oaEuZt4pX92IB

As soon as Emma Kate opened the box, I was down on the floor next to her, helping her set up the “choo choo train” and building tall towers that are “so high” (her favorite). I think it’s so important to not only let a child’s imagination grow, but as parents, we should be partnering with our kids in playtime, showing them the ropes and encouraging them to learn new things. Kids learn by playing, touching, and experiencing new things. It is my job to guide Emma Kate on this learning journey, and LEGO® DUPLO® just makes it a lot of FUN! The nice of the legos is that you can build anything you want, there are few toys like that, for example a spinning toy that you can learn how to build your own.

lU_EclzEfvm0zxnhOYDmK-DGYi5brsJDgcRuiJfUHBcpX92IB

LEGO® DUPLO® offers so much flexibility and open-ended play for each stage of your young one’s development. You can do things from build towers, to trains, to buildings and more. There are even figurines like cute dogs and little people to put in the structures.

Unpacking in Tampa

Hello from Tampa! We finally have internet and my laptop is up and running. I may be surrounded by boxes, but I have a Christmas candle burning, music playing, and my tree is up. However, it has been quite the experience to get to this point. Let me backtrack.

Me, Bobby and Emma Kate left my parent’s house in Louisiana on Sunday and drove to Tallahassee. Then Monday we drove to Tampa and it was warm enough to swim at the hotel pool!

ZVguhtujn88fh67QiWPHMy8QhvOe4hgdHTLcBooPFO0pX92IB

We battled several issues back and forth with our lender and the title company all day Monday, and weren’t sure we were going to be able to close on Tuesday. Tuesday morning came and after more back and forth, we FINALLY got the final numbers literally fifteen minutes before closing. We were able to do the walk through and get to closing, but we had to hurry because the movers were set to come at 1:00 (closing was 11:30).hO8QiqcuZBC3zm3EWY5562phR9lOZRrSEcbQ2hOpEr0pX92IBO6s2USUwoHpCAxxuZIAzaQBtnhdUkEcHBkrSoXvbrkUpX92IB

We get to the closing and the lenders had sent over the wrong packet for signing!!! So they had to send over the right one and reprint everything. If you have ever bought a home you know how much paperwork this is. Finally after 12:30 we started signing. As we are signing, the electricity goes out. Yall, I can’t make this stuff up! We finally got into the house and the poor movers were here until after 7:00.

0lBZFnyE8fL-UHyo9taRWq87O7uQz7ZS1OYnufLR_5spX92IB

I have never seen so much packing paper in all my life. They pack stuff up super tight and well, but I felt it was a bit excessive and did feel guilty/wasteful.P_3IkSM_TnE4rMP1RDMeup3ptk2pLy2GQ62WowzoJWEpX92IB

Things are slowly coming together, but there are still boxes everywhere. We haven’t even touched the stacks in the garage and I have been wearing the same three outfits and and over for days. TWWIEejvrU4y-v1T2U_joQUqrEiFR2-PfPW09X6zN1opX92IB4pJ80TMBUvsZ-jG1w5L-gps5id0npgBY91p6D76k4CMpX92IB

However, Emma Kate LOVES the packing paper. I’m thinking I should just save some to give to her for Christmas instead of spending money on toys!IHb7dKfaWDG2vYYpew1j5Aclz-H0AsILu89f2njxzuMpX92IB

I was sure to get our patio set up first thing, and we love our view!xP3NS9by3RTQ7rMmXs_wH9wU61-9_wNse5NBxxldjckpX92IB

More to come, I still have to do a gift guide and recap the rest of our Disney trip. It’s all coming up I promise!

Back from Disney World

Hey friends! I am back from Florida. It has been a whirlwind week and a half, and it is so good to be home! If you will recall when we left for Disney Emma Kate was sick, and let’s just say we have had better Disney trips. She was super cranky and fussy (rightfully so) and keeping it real, it really stressed us all out. Her fever broke the day we got to Disney but that didn’t stop her craziness. I’m not sure if she was just super tired, or overwhelmed or what, but I have never seen her act the way she did in Disney…she was a hot mess! I think not knowing what to expect was difficult on us, and let’s just say I need a vacation from my vacation. We for sure still had fun and happy moments, and I can’t wait to share them with you over the next couple of weeks. You will get the good, the bad and the ugly of taking a very strong willed two year old to Disney. Smile I loved seeing her meet the princesses, ride the rides, and experience my happy place. Of course there is still so much more I want to show her, but we got a good start on getting her obsessed with Disney just like the rest of the family. She said cute things like “BIG CASTLE!” and “Pluto has a big tongue” and “Emma Kate and Minnie Mouse!”

My parents recently bought into the Disney vacation club and generously used their points for our trip, and getting a two bedroom villa was for sure the way to go. We could put Emma Kate to bed at night and still hang out in the living room without having to be quiet. We were on the first floor of Saratoga Springs and it was great to let her just walk out of the patio and out to the grass or playground. Having a full kitchen and washer and dryer was a plus, too!

Our room was on the bottom right behind the bench in the back of the photo.

Also having our car was the way to go because we didn’t have to wait in long bus lines with a toddler having a meltdown. We still were able to ride the ferry and the monorail which Emma Kate liked.

My dad and I went to the grocery store the first day to get groceries so we cold eat snacks and breakfast in the room each day to save money. We also grilled outside by the playground the last night which was a lot of fun. Emma Kate loved the pool/kids water play area and we went there three or four times in the afternoon after nap.

I feel like my thoughts are so scattered right now and I will get more specific when I give you my daily recaps, but I did want to check in and let yall know I am still alive and that you will hear more about the trip. I hope everyone had a great week!

Finally Fall

Fall finally decided to show up in Mississippi this weekend. It was gorgeous and sunny Saturday and Sunday with lows in the low 50’s and highs in the 70’s. For our third year and a row, my dad took Emma Kate to the classic car show in our city and out to lunch at McAlisters. This year was the most challenging because last year she was just learning to walk and the year before she was only a month old!

It’s fun to walk around a free event checking out all the cars. It helps when the weather is beautiful! We are all about free things to do.

There were rows and rows of classic cars of all different colors.

We walked over to McAlisters and sat outside for lunch before walking over to our yogurt shop for dessert.

Saturday night we had a fall get together with our life group from church. It was at my friends house who lives down the street, so we just walked over. We had chips and dip, chili, soup, and caramel apples. Emma Kate had a blast playing with all the other kids. I didn’t take any photos, but if you saw my Instagram story then you saw Emma Kate wipe out on some playground equipment (she was fine).

Then some friends came over and watched part of the LSU/Ole Miss game. I went to bed at 11:00 because the game didn’t start until 8:15, so it was way past my bedtime.

Sunday we went to church and then had the annual fun fest at our church. It’s a free community wide event with games, candy, and lots of fun!

We went in the bouncy house about five times, watched the puppet show, and helped with the photo booth. She slept like a rock that night!

It was our third year at fun fest and it is something I will definitely miss when we move.

Swim Readiness: Then and Now

This post was sponsored by Speedo. Thanks for the products you sent to me and Emma Kate!

Before I had a baby, getting dressed and ready to swim was a fairly simple task. I only had to think about what I needed to do for myself, and myself alone. Oh how I took for granted those simpler times, because getting a child ready to swim is a whole different ball game! I wanted to take you through my step by step process of what it’s like now to get ready to go to the pool/water with a toddler.

The dance of the swimsuit:

First I have to actually convince my toddler to get into her swimsuit. This may or may not involve chasing, begging, wrestling, and crying (me, not her). Ok, so maybe I’m kidding a little, but once Emma Kate saw her adorable new sun shirt from Speedo, she asked me to immediately help her get it on. This sun shirt is quick drying. It also is UV50+ and provides protection from harmful sun rays. To learn more about this product, go to this page. Emma Kate was obsessed with the butterflies on it!

The “slather”:

Putting sunscreen on a child is very, very important, but also extremely difficult. As a teenager, I worked at a local summer camp, and distinctly remember how hard it was to get squirmy four year olds to stay still long enough to coat them in the protective stuff. Inevitably, one would turn their head and sunscreen would get in their eyes, hair, etc. Thankfully, Emma Kate understands the importance of sun protection, and knows she will not get to go near the water without it, so she generally complies without too much fuss when I slather it on her.

Swim Shoe shuffle:

We have a water table and kiddie splash pad we like to set up in the backyard. However, we quickly realized that when the concrete gets wet, it’s quite slippery. I immediately got Emma Kate some swim shoes from Speedo, and now she is much safer. They are also great for the pool or pool deck so their little feet don’t get blisters! We love the awesome colors too, and how easy it is to get them on and off with their four way stretch.

Rules were made to be broken—er… followed:

I know Emma Kate is only two, but she had a pretty firm grasp on what is expected of her when we are near water. No running, no getting in the water without me, and always wear your swim vest/life jacket. We obey other adults and life guards and stay in the shallow water. Even at her age I feel it’s important to be consistently repetitive so she knows what is expected of her ahead of time.

The rinse:

I always think it is wise to rinse off in the shower (most pools have an outdoor one nearby) before getting in the water. I mean, we are dealing with toddlers here, and at any given time there are five different kinds of food stuck to her face and in her hair, and we don’t want to get that in the pool.

So on top of getting mommy in her cute Speedo swimsuit and cover up, (My new swimsuit has great adjustable straps on the top, and is stretchy and flexible. My cover up is super comfy and has a lightweight, cute racerback design) and getting sunscreen applied, there are a lot of other things to consider these days. I have to plan ahead, and make sure I have allowed enough time to get together everything we need for a fun and successful day in the water.
