Flashback to June 2013

How is it already almost June? I’m not sure if things are flying by because of the pregnancy, or if this is just how life is going to be now, but slloowww down! It always makes me laugh when I talk about something that I swear happened “just a couple months ago” and no no, it was LAST YEAR. Hhhmmm… So I thought it would be fun to do another flashback (I love these, sorry guys!) and see what I was doing this time last year. Well, what I was doing in June, since it’s almost June now.

Last June, Bobby participated in his first Duathalon. It was actually a “summer series” where they had three sets of races, and it was about five minutes from our house with only a $10 entry fee. Score! He did great and improved his time each race.

Bobby and I went on a road trip with my parents to Atlanta to visit some old friends. (Fun fact, I lived outside of ATL from the ages of 2-7). We had a blast with no real “schedule”, it was nice to get away for a few days.

We found out that the golf course right by our house had $20 “twilight golf” where you could play anytime after 4:00, cart included, for $20. He hit the links a handful of times and I got to be his driver.

June 6 is Bobby’s birthday, so there was of course, cake.

He may have had cake twice. After all, it was his 30th!

Disney Golf: Fun for All Ages

While on one of my recent trips to Walt Disney World, I had the privilege of visiting Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course and speak with Michael Schlager, Arnold Palmer Golf Management’s PGA Director of Instruction, as well as some other wonderful folks passionate about Disney and golf.

Disney Golf

Before touring the course, I spoke with Michael about something he was really excited about: youth camps. Did you know you can come to Disney on summer vacation and send your future Tiger Woods to camp? Camps are a week long (ages 8-13) and campers not only learn the techniques of the game, but are also taught about teamwork and having good sportsmanship. There are contests during the week, and prizes like medals, trading pins, and the like can be won.  To end the week, there is even a fun tournament.

Since it is Disney, fun surprises like watching a Disney movie during lunch are also common at camp. (Lunch, drinks, and clubs are included in the price of the camp). At the end of the five days, each child is given a training program, and a way to get in touch with Michael if they have questions or just need a little encouragement. I absolutely love that fact that just because the camp ends, it doesn’t mean the support goes away. Michael was so genuine and excited to talk about his camps, and seemed proud of the fact that there were a lot of repeat campers.

One day camps are also offered year round for kids ages 8-17 that are visiting Disney at other times of the year. As I closed my time with Michael, he mentioned wanting to start a competitive camp for the summer of 2014.

After our chat, I hopped on a golf cart with Kristina Cullison (Director of Sales and Events) to take a tour of the beautiful course. I learned that the Disney courses are management by Arnold Palmer Golf management, and that the Palm course recently received an Arnold Palmer redesign.

The first thing I noticed was the amazing cart we were riding in. It had a color GPS screen in the front giving you information about each hole.

DSC_0982

There are even signs at the beginning of each one with a “memorable moment” for that hole. I loved reading all the history!

DSC_0986

The highlight of the course was seeing the Mickey bunker! I loved how there were subtle Disney touches everywhere on property, including the golf course.

DSC_0989

The course was in great shape, had gorgeous views, and a peaceful atmosphere.

We also drove our cart by Disney’s Oak Trail, which is a 9-hole walking course. So many options for Disney golf!

DSC_0995

We headed back to the Pro Shop, where I learned even more about the course, and was given great information for folks wanting to come play the course. A great tip is that you don’t have to worry about bringing your clubs and gear with you on vacation. Save that precious suitcase space for souvenirs! TaylorMade Rocketballz clubs and Adidas shoes are on hand for you to rent at all Disney golf courses.

You also don’t have to worry about renting a car, as there is complimentary transportation to and from your Disney resort, just ask about it when you call to set up your tee time. (Note: These courses are also open to the public).

I have yet to play on a Disney course, and the whole time I was touring I kept thinking “I have got to get my husband and dad out here!” I know they would have a blast, it is Disney after all.

To learn more, visit Disney’s Golf website, or call (407) WDW-Golf (939-4653).

QOTD: Have you ever golfed at Disney? Do you like to golf?

June Photo Dump

Good morning! I didn’t get home until 10:00 last night, so the great post I was working on isn’t going up until tomorrow because I needed more time on it. So today you get a “wordless Wednesday” of sorts (just ignore that I’m using words RIGHT NOW….ok so I will caption them…) and see some of the photos I am dumping into my computer from my phone. Some have appeared on Instagram, some haven’t.

Golf Outing

On Thursday, Bobby and I hit a local golf course because Bobby had a couple for 9 free holes of golf the course sent him on his birthday. It was a hot afternoon, but we figured it was as good a time as any.

golf

I of course was the official driver and locator of golf balls in the trees. Smile Poor Bobby doesn’t get to practice as much as he would like. He hasn’t played in a year!

golf2

It was an older course that wasn’t in great shape…but really for free I wasn’t going to complain, but wow it was bad. At some parts, the path just disappeared and you went off into the grass until it reappeared again. There were tree roots going all through the course, and the sand traps had more grass in them than sand. Oy.

However, I did have fun zipping around in the cart and keeping score for Bobby. I also got to putt a few times. I’m not too shabby, but let’s also say I have no future in golf.

golf3

I also got to try out my snazzy new Under Armour shoes. Love them, way cool.

It was a fun way for the two of us to spend a couple of hours together just goofing off and having fun. We are hoping to go back and do the same thing next week. Maybe we will wait until about 6:00 instead of 2:30. I was ready for some air conditioning!

QOTD: Do you play golf, or ride in the cart? Hate golf all together?

Viking Classic Golf Tournament

Good evening! Today has been quite the busy one! This morning, Bobby and I went to the Viking Classic golf tournament, which is part of the PGA tour. Someone gave us free tickets, so we said “why not?” Sadly, I was told one of a bloggers most dreaded words..”no cameras allowed.” Bummer! So I took some pictures leading up to where we parked just to have something haha! (Also, no cell phones were allowed!)

I found this quite amusing, and those that love Disney will appreciate it. When we were leaving, a lady stopped and took our picture, then handed us a card and said we could go online and view/buy. I felt like it was Disney’s photopass service, too funny! Here is our picture.

GetImage

We got back in the car, and had a voicemail from someone wanting to see our house. YIKES! We were starving and planning to stop for lunch, but our house was a MESS. So we ate Mexican really quickly, got home in time for Saints kickoff, and cleaned at commercials and in between plays! They came and went, then we left again because we got a call for someone wanting to look at Bobby’s dad’s house, so we went over there, showed the house, and did about an hours worth of more cleaning, and now we are home and tired, whew! All I can say is at least our house is really clean again!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I am not really sore from our run which is good. We took a walk last night and walked a lot at the tournament this morning so I think that has helped. Tomorrow will be an easy recovery run, then 5 miles Wednesday then the half marathon Saturday!
