The Dangers of Running

Most of you are probably going “huh? running is good for you? how is it dangerous?” Well, if you don’t run, I am here to tell you, be careful, it can be hazardous to your health! Let me give you some examples:
Dogs. yes dogs. We have a leash law in our neighborhood, but does that stop people from letting their dogs run amuck like crazy kids in a toy store? Of course not! Who follows the rules anyway!!! I am here to tell you, I am very observant when I run, and am always on the lookout, and searching for the closest car that I can potentially jump on the roof of. What is even more scary is when there are dogs inside of electric fences that you don’t know exist (the fence not the dog.) There is one particular house with such a fence, and a very large, scary, dog. One day, I was minding my own business, running on the sidewalk, and said dog comes sprinting out of nowhere, right towards me. As I went flying into the street, nearing peeing my pants, the dog suddenly stops dead in his tracks. This is when notice…the collar…UG. So i totally just freaked out for nothing. I was NOT amused.
Next danger is signs. I have the story of my best friend for this one. She was running one day, no one else was home, and she somehow managed to trip on a yard sign that was sticking out. She fell and cut up her hands and legs and broke a bone in her foot and had to hobble a long way back home on her poor broken foot since no one was home to come get her. Isn’t that sad? I am now very careful of stop signs, yard signs, and the like. I kind of like my feet and do not want to break them.
Third danger is the road itself. This story did not happen to my same friend but to someone she knows. A lady was out walking in the dark one morning, tripped on a part of the road, face planted, and had to get stitches in her face! WOW! I would not only feel stupid but ouch!!! Poor woman.
The dark reminds me of my next danger, well…the dark. This is hazardous for me more mentally than anything. I ama chicken. I do not like the dark. Therefore, I do not run alone in the dark. Creepy things live in the dark/woods! Talk about giving me nightmares! The physical dangers of dark are also very scary because if you are running on the road, in the dark, NOT wearing reflective gear (shame shame) you could very easily be hit by a not so fun thing, yes, a car.
The last thing I want to discuss is regional scary things. For instance, I was home for Christmas in Louisiana, running with my mom next to a swamp.Let me tell you, the entire run I kept my eyes on that watery mess just waiting for an alligator to jump out and eat me! Or a snake. Obviously a snake couldn’t eat me, but, you get the idea. I kept looking for things I could climb on if necessary. I have watched animal planet. I know how fast those things move! With that being said, what are some regional things that are dangers of running near you? I can think of some from other regions, but first want to see what others come up with before I list the ones I thought of.
On a side note, I think running is great, and the benefits largely outweigh the hazards, but I like to file things like this under the cabinet in my brain labeled “good to know” just in case that dog’s electric fence isn’t turned on….

SO running. I only ran 2 miles today. The wind was horrid and my nose was running so badly and I couldn’t breathe. awesome.
look at this pretty picture I took on my way to work. It was a gorgeous day, high of 61 and sunny!

Matching puppies

SO as you should know, I have a minnie dot (minnie mouse) running skirt. i wore it for the disney half. Well, my sweet puppies also have a minnie mouse skirt..but they don’t run. I do believe I need to get a picture of us in our matching outfits though!

aren’t they precious?! they look so happy HAHA!

On an actual running topic…My husband and I ran 6 miles after I got home from work. beautiful, sunny, no clouds, 66 degrees. It was great! Now, I was very tired from my long day and week, so it wasn’t a fast run but we did it. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow so we wanted to go ahead and do it on the pretty day.

I have been proud of my running this week. Trying to get back into the swing of things! Basketball will be over after this week and then that will free up some more of my time as well. Although next week the high is in the low 50’s so I have a feeling it will be back to the treadmill for me.

So, now I ask, does your pet wear clothes? what kind of clothes and what kind of pet? I am curious!

The rain brings the sun

So last night was interesting to say the least. Bobby made me get in the hall bathroom (no windows) with the puppies, laptop (directv went out) anf flashlight radio. I eventually got out into the hall but we wanted the puppies to stay in the bathroom so we blocked them off with a huge pack of toliet paper lol! They were whining and crying and so confused.

we finally went to bed and more storms and hail came at 12:00 so we were up again for about an hour but didn’t feel the need to hide this time, we were just under a tornado watch, no more warning.

SO with that lovely evening, it brought a BEAUTIFUL day today. sunny and 73! but still a tease. (refer to “what a tease” post) So today i felt conflicted. Bobby and i are running tomorrow, and I ran yesterday, so I was going to take today off. So I came home, walked the dogs, did some hand weights and leg exercises and then sat down to watch tv. After sitting for a few minutes…I started to feel guilty for not being outside running! So after much inward deliberation, I laced up my shoes and was outside again. I just did a quick 2 miles but it was something and I feel better and like I didn’t “waste” the pretty day.

here is today, looks much better than yesterday!

**I also added more pics to my photos section and will continue to add more so stay tuned!

What a Tease!

This morning, I wnet on a 5 mile run with my husband. I didn’t have work today so it was nice to wake up to the sun, and then go run in the 52 degree weather! We ran a new way today. Instead of going through our boring neighborhood we ran down our old country road, across the street and onto the trails of another neighborhood. They were so quiet and peaceful! It was a really nice run.

here is our road, looking both ways.

the trails in the Reunion

running by some houses

I think we will start running this way more ofter. The trail wraps all the way around the neighborhood, or we could run through the neighborhood. Lots of options! This excites me because I was getting REALLY boared of our small neighborhood and didn’t want to have to drive somewhere to run.
SO I definately feel accomplished and wish i could run in the morning every day! (In daylight and not freezing) I have so much more energy now.
So to explain the title of this post, the high today is 64! After weeks of freezing, 64! This weekend it’s supposed to be 72! wow! But, it’s such a tease because next week, the high is 54….grumble grumble…come on spring!

**I also updated my races section with a couple pics from other races we have run.

working on it

I added some pictures to the “races” section of my blog, and I have more to add, so check back soon! I am also going to when I get some free time (haha) work on my my layout, adding other things/links to my blog, etc. I have a few links but need to add more!

On an actual running note, I ran 3 miles with my husband yesterday. It was miserable!!! Goes to show how much adrenaline affects you! How did I run 13.1 miles without stopping except to get water, but 3 was torture yesterday? running is a funny thing…

…and then life gets in the way.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we didn’t have to work and could just workout whenever we want? One of my biggest struggles is making time to run. By nature, I am a morning runner. I have more energy, I get it over with and just perform better. fact.
Also fact, I leave for work at 6:30. so if I were to get up and run I would have to get up at 4:15 or so…and that would not be fun. I so wish soemtimes I had a job with a lunch break, or a job where I didn’t have to be in until 9, so I could get up at a reasonable hour and run.
But, unfortunately, I am not so lucky. Maybe someday! So, back to my problem. When I run in the afternoons I am lucky to get in 3 miles. I ahve to get home to let the dogs out, I also coach basketball so some nights I can’t make it to the gym at all, etc. etc. So what do you do? I am just SO TIRED by the time I leave work it’s hard to wlak to the car let alone get to the gym. Oh, I also forgot to mention, me going to sleep at 8 so I can get up at 4 is not an option. my husband gets home from work at 8:30 so I would never get to see him, the dogs freak out when he comes home and would wake me up anyway etc. SO WHAT DO I DO?!? thoughts?
What do you do?

Oh, by the way, the whole reason i wrote this is because I went to the gym yesterday and only had time for 2 miles before I had to get back to the school to coach…then i got home late so i went to bed late so I am exhausted today so no run. (not to mention I have 3 errands to run) Why can’t we all just RUN?!? (sometimes I want to run away haha)
sometimes when I am leaving for work and see the women out at 6:30-6:45 running I want to push them down…no just kidding, but I am super jealous!

First run post race

Well, I did what I kinda did kinda didn’t want to do…I ran the whole half marathon, minus a few water stops and when the hubby had to use the bathroom…so now I prooved to myself I can do it, which means next time I am whining about a short 3 mile run..I really can’t because well…I ran 13.1 miles!
I do this to my kids all the time (I teach 5th grade) they will perform poorly on several tests, I will tell them they are not working up to their potential. The, they turn around and make an A. That;s when I catch them. ah HA! I KNEW you could do it. NOW, I expect nothing less than that.
Well, that’s kinda how I feel, except, I did it to myself! All this being said, I am heading to the gym for my first post race run and I am actually a little nervous! It will have to be a short one because I have to go coach a basketball game after, but, I know I will have to run the whole time 🙂

Record setting lows…and sleet!

Oh. My. Gosh.
I ran my first half, the Disney half this morning. What an experience!! Because we are so lucky, we ran on a day of record breaking lows! We also ran in sleet and freezing rain pelting us in the race!!
I will do a full race recap when I get home, but I just wanted to say I did it! I was trying not to cry as I crossed the finish line. The weather made it miserable!!

We ended up running in 2 hours and 45 minutes. Goal was 2:30 but considering the conditions I am not upset.

More to come, but boy do I feel accomplished!!! I DID IT!!
