Weekend Ramblings: September Edition

It’s College football day! I will be spending the day in front of the television preparing for the LSU game. I can’t wait! I hope you all have a great weekend, here are a few random ramblings for you:

1.) Verizon sent me an external battery for my Blackberry, and it’s so convenient! It is especially great when I am out somewhere all day or on a trip and I am using my phone a lot. I hate doing the “conserve battery” thing so it lasts all day, and now I don’t have to, woo hoo! They sent me the Power Pack Slim 2000:

2.) Bobby and I leave for another trip on Wednesday to run runDisney’s Tower of Terror ten miler, so we have been busy cleaning, packing, and doing last minute things like getting the mail held and checking in with the house and dog sitters. I think I am going to just start living out of my suitcase since I seem to do so anyway. If you aren’t following me on Instagram you will miss all my trip photos as they happen!

3.) The winner of my Under Armour sports bra giveaway is Carol Couvillion Landry. Please email me at heatherslookingglass@gmail.com to claim your prize! Don’t forget you can order things from UA by clicking the link on my right sidebar.

4.) I cooked potato soup last night and forgot how much I love it. (I just can’t stand cooking it in the summer when it is so stinkin hot). I have the recipe here, as well as some other good ones.

5.) I am in need of a handful of guest posts for next week. if you are interested please email me at heatherslookingglass@gmail.com. Thanks in advance!

QOTD: What college football team do you root for?

Blackberry.

Disclosure: I am a Verizon Wireless ambassador and was given a phone, accessories, and free service. However, all opinions are my own.

Weekend Happenings: I’m Going to Disney World!

Guess where I am going today? DISNEY WORLD! This time, I am going for work. There is a special travel agency conference every year and I was invited to go with my boss as a delegate, meaning I will be attending seminars and meetings. We are going a couple days early to have a little fun and do some research before the conference begins, but yup, work trip. Not that’ I’m complaining. Smile

I will be staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge tonight and tomorrow night, and then will move to the Contemporary until Thursday. I am so excited, I have never stayed at the Contemporary before. I will also be attending Mickey’s Not so Scary Halloween party, so stay tuned if you want to see my costume!

I will have my laptop with me and will still be blogging and on social media thanks to my handy dandy Blackberry Q10 and it’s awesome mobile hotspot capabilities. My husband and I are pretty amazed at the internet speed coming from that little device. It’s super fast!

Speaking of little thing, we are also loving the Blackberry mini stereo speaker I received. Bobby clips it onto his shorts and listens to music from it when he is outside working in the yard of BBQ-ing. It has really good sound quality, much crisper and louder than coming straight out of a phone (especially one in a case).

I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! Winner of my Raw Threads giveaway announced soon!

It Can Wait

Is it really that important? Too many people are getting into deadly accident because they just HAD to check that text/text while driving. Most of the time, the text is something like “ok” or even something silly that doesn’t need an answer. Not earth shattering things that have to be addressed immediately yall. I consider myself a very safe driver, but there is absolutely nothing I can do if someone else out there driving decides to do something stupid. Over 100,000 crashes a year involve drivers who are texting!

I am asking you all to take the It Can Wait pledge with me to not text and drive. The pledge states “no text message, email, website or video is worth the risk of endangering my life or the lives of others on the road.” Amen.

If you go to the website, you will see it’s easy to take the pledge and you can even share a personal story if you would like. There is also a badge you can download and put on a blog, etc. You can also use the #itcanwait hashtag when sharing on Twitter that you made the pledge!

Take the pledge, then put the logo up on your site. I am pinning it so you can save it from Pinterest!

QOTD: Did you take the pledge? I would love to know!

Accessories for a Healthy Lifestyle

As a very “connected” people, we are always finding new ways for technology to help us improve our lives. One thing a lot of people have begun to do is use it for health and fitness, which I think is a fabulous idea. Verizon has a ton of accessories that can be helpful in achieving the fitness level you desire, and to also help you keep your weight on track. Check out some of my favorite cool accessories that Verizon offers:

Fitbit Zip: This is a simple tool to help keep you on track with how much you are moving during the day. It tracks your steps and your distance, as well as calories burned. I love mine! It easily clips onto your belt loop or shirt, and it doesn’t bother you at all during the day. (At least not me!) I have even heard people say they accidentally put it through the wash and it came out ok!

FitBit-Zip

Smart Scale: My favorite thing about this scale is that it updates your stats to your fitbit dashboard so you can keep track. It also measures body fat and BMI (honestly I hate BMI though, so don’t get me started.) This bad boy is wi-fi enabled for easy tracking and recording. Pretty nifty!

FitBit-Aria-Scale

MotoACTV Bike mount: I don’t really ride, but I know my husband would love this. It easily attaches to your handlebars so you can clearly see your stats as you go. It has a GPS in it, so you can track your training and also put it online on your personal training log. You can also sync this to your android phone and be alerted when you get texts, tweets, etc. I love that!

QOTD: Which of these three would you like to try?

Top 5 Smart Accessories

Good morning! I am hopping on a 7:15 flight this morning and heading to Orlando! I will check into the Grand Floridian, and then the press event will begin after lunch. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, instagram, and Facebook via the social media icons on my right sidebar of my blog. I will be live tweeting/etc. the event Thursday and Friday and you won’t want to miss the new information I will be posting! Also don’t worry, while I am gone I have some great guest posters who will be taking over my blog (I will also be popping in on a couple of days to post about press event info I learn). Be sure to show them some love!

I recently spoke about getting the new Blackberry Z10 smart phone. There was a bit of a learning curve, but I have enjoyed getting to know my phone. Now that I have used it a good bit, it’s time to think about accessories! here are five accessories that I found that I would love to try out for various reasons:

Nokia JBL Power Up Speaker- This is a wireless charging speaker with Legendary JBL® sound in a compact design. You can wirelessly charge your device simply by placing it on top of the speaker. It is also compatible with any Bluetooth®-enabled device.

jbl_speaker_nokmd100w

LG wireless charging Bluetooth headset- This accessory features a solid, durable look and feel built into a compact and lightweight design. The geometric mesh surface is the contact point for Wireless Charging. The Power/Call button and Volume buttons are placed well for easy access while wearing the device.

lg_bluetooth_headset_lbtw600z

Fitbit one- I have the FitBit zipp, but would love to try this one! During the day, it tracks your steps, distance, calories burned, and stairs climbed. At night, it measures your sleep cycle to help you see how to sleep better; and it can even wake you in the morning without waking other in your home. Your stats upload wirelessly to your computer and select mobile phones.  You can set goals, and track progress while competing with your friends.

Lifeproof armband- I already have a lifeproof case, so this armband would be great to have so I could wear it while I run instead of holding my phone. Made from breathable spandex, the wide strap and non-slip silicone dots keep it stable and comfortable as you move. The Velcro strap adjusts to fit most, and it’s also lightweight. Reflective markings make you more visible when training after dark.

Tagg pet tracker- This is a purpose-built tracking device that helps pet owners find and track their pet. The pet owner tells the Tagg system where they want their pet to be, and  if the pet ever leaves the Tagg zone, the owner receives text and email alerts. Tagg’s innovative technology quickly pinpoints the pet’s location using a mobile device or computer. The Tagg master kit includes three months of service. After the first three months, service costs $7.95/month and includes unlimited alert notifications

Fitbit Review

As a Verizon Wireless Ambassador, I was sent a fun new gadget in the mail the other day, and I am so excited to share it with you…it’s a Fitbit! Not going to lie, I had never heard of this until it showed up in my mailbox (have I been living under a rock?!?) However, as a runner and health nut, I was really excited to try it out.

photo (274

The Fitbit tracks your steps, distance, and calories burned. The coolest part is, you can sync it to you computer or some smartphones so you can check your progress during the day without having to check your Fitbit.

You can easily attach it to your pants, bra, etc. (I even attached mine to the inside of my boot when I went to dinner!) It’s very sturdy and doesn’t fall off easily. When you want to switch between screens you just tap or thump the front and it changes from distance, to calories, etc.

I obviously love competing with myself, so having my own Fitbit account so that I can track my progress, earn badges, and even have a little fun competing with friends. I like to try and outdo the day before, and earn more badges. Right up my alley!

photo (22)

The device is also sweat rain and splash proof. I have worn it for three days and am really loving it. I forget I’m wearing it, so it definitely doesn’t distract me or bother me during the day. I also like checking in and seeing how I am doing during the day. If I need to walk more, or burn more calories.

*Note, running on the treadmill will not track the distance properly. I ran 6 miles on the treadmill yesterday and it said I went four and a half miles. However it is still nice to have an approximation.

Guess what? Verizon Wireless has offered to give $5 off to RWS readers who purchase a Fitbit through this link: Fitbit

Thanks Verizon!

QOTD: What are your thoughts on the Fitbit? Have you heard of it and would you ever use one?

Favorite Apps For the Windows 8X Phone

I have spent the last month getting used to the Windows 8X phone, and have finally discovered some of my favorite apps. It is true that the app store is a bit lacking, however I have found some great substitutes, and new favorites, check them out!

photo 49

Fhotoroom- Mobile photo editor, good substitute for Instagram. Filter your photos with 50+ filters, then share to skydrive, Facebook, twitter, or flickr. There is also a basic editor to tweak your photos.

Allrecipes- Delivers thousands of recipes featuring photos and reviews, and it’s free! Choose by ingredient, time it takes to cook, or type of dish 9appetixer, dessert, etc.)

The Emergency Kit- Store your blood type, allergies, medications, or your emergency contacts. A personalized lock screen will contain your emergency contacts even if screen is locked. You can also turn your phone into an SOS light beacon and learn how to treat different injuries.

Pinspiration – Browse and post to Pinterest from your mobile phone. You can even sign into your account and share images.

Rowi- Third party Twitter app. You can use multiple accounts so you can “tweet as” different accounts.

Learning the Ropes of Windows Phone 8X

As I mentioned in a post recently, I was asked again to be an ambassador for Verizon Wireless, this time getting the Windows 8X phone by HTC, and an Otterbox.

photo 95

This phone was a bit overwhelming at first because it is different than anything I have had before in a phone. However, as a windows user, I quickly figured it out and wanted to share some of the great features with you!

-I love how lightweight and thin it is. It has a bigger screen than my iPhone (but not as big as my galaxy S3) and the buttons are flush against the phone and while it makes it very sleek, they can sometimes be slightly difficult to press, which isn’t a huge deal.

-The personalization is great, you can “pin” things to your screen, and make them bigger or smaller. You can also customize your home screen colors (love the pink obviously!) and what you want tos ee on your home screen.

-The colors are very vivid, and the camera is easy to access even from a locked phone, and it takes a very wide angled shot, so no more crowding people to fit them into your photo (one of my favorite features!)

-A couple of areas it is lacking, the social sharing is a bit more difficult straight from photos, and the marketplace is lacking in some of my favorite apps (but I hear they are working on this) so it’s definitely not a deal breaker, I have just had to get a bit more creative!

In future posts I will be talking more specifically about some of the features like the beats audio and the camera, kids corner, etc. But I just wanted to give a quick overview after using it for a couple of weeks!

I realized I never shared photos of the outside of my house decorated for Christmas, so here ya go, my last Christmas-y post, I promise!

Stay Connected

I am a bit obsessed with being connected to social media, texts, phone calls, etc. This is a blessing and a curse I know, but it is also part of my two jobs. I was chosen to return as a Verizon Wireless ambassador, and I am so excited to share some new info, tips, and tricks about my brand new phone….the Windows phone 8X by HTC! I am a PC girl, so this phone is right up my alley and I found myself able to learn it very quickly.

photo (27)

Why hello new phone. I love you and I don’t even know you.

Not only was I given a phone, but we also given this awesome OtterBox! I actually *cough* BOBBY *cough* a mishap with my Galaxy S3 from last time, and it got dropped and scrapped up because I had no case for it….so I was STOKED to get a case this time. So far I am loving it (it’s from the defender series) and don’t feel like I have to constantly worry about dropping my phone.

photo (28)

I can’t wait to share more about the device itself with you, I will be using #VZWA on Twitter when tweeting about it, so be on the lookout. So far my favorite thing is the live tiles! Staying connected is so easy with everything right on my home screen.

—————————————–

In other news, I started seeing a chiropractor again, and on top of already knowing I have neck and back problems, we talked about one hip being higher than the other which is probably throwing my bio mechanics off when I run, he is going to do some ART on me and also some stretches and exercises I can do to work on any muscular imbalances, etc. I am really hopeful about getting help for my body to improve my overall health and my running!

QOTD: Have you ever dropped your phone? Do you keep it in a case?

Headed on Out

Morning friends! I am headed on out to New Orleans today for the Jazz half marathon! I ran this race in 2010 and really love it, and can’t wait to do it again, even if I am not in the best shape/health, it will still be a blast. New Orleans is an awesome place to race and I love this one not only because it’s smaller and less crowded, but it benefits Children’s Hospital.
